David Ramsey, most known for his role as John Diggle in Arrow, has played the character since October 2012, and almost 9 years later – he’s still running around the universe.
At the very end of Arrow, John Diggle looked to become a Green Lantern, which is what a lot of people’s theory crafted around anyway. Given the pure of heart nature, military background, and always doing the right thing.
Despite it ending with the green glow of the lantern, we never actually saw or heard of what happened after that. We were essentially told to just make it up in our heads.
Fast forward a year, and we’re told that David Ramsey would return to direct an episode from each of the Arrowverse episodes. This includes Batwoman, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, Supergirl, Superman & Lois, and The Flash.
We were also told that David himself would be returning to his role as John Diggle in an episode of each of the shows which got fans excited – including me. I think I just want to see a damn Green Lantern in live-action, even if I disagreed with John Diggle becoming a Lantern.
He showed up in Batwoman and briefly helped Luke – mentioned he had headaches and he was visiting a clinic the following day. It turns out that he TURNED the Lantern and Ring down which is just damn right stupid and lazy writing anyway – but his return in Batwoman went from an exciting one to me just scratching my head.
The Legends of Tomorrow appearance was a waste of time, as is that show. Now we have 3 shows left, and his time within each show has been very short, and overall – wasted.
John Diggle is a fantastic character, David Ramsey is an exceptional actor, and Diggle was my favorite sidekick in the entire Arrowverse because he always kept Oliver Queen in line and made sure he knew what he was doing. This is a man that deserves something after Arrow and has the capability of doing something more than what he’s doing now.
Even if that means bringing him into Batwoman, or The Flash, or creating an Argus-focused show with him at the centerfold would work. What we’re seeing now is just pointless – at least it currently feels that way.
Don’t get me wrong, the episodes Ramsey has directed so far have been phenomenal, and you can tell he genuinely cares about the universe, considering he was part of the show that kicked off this massive TV crossed universe we have now, even if it barely actually crosses anymore (an article for another day).
So, what’s the point? We don’t know. I wish it made more sense, and I hope by the end of it, it does. The CW has so far turned down a Wonder Girl show, and the unpopular decision not to move forward with the fan-favorite Painkiller spin-off series from Black Lightning.
They have scope to do something with David and his John Diggle character, and I honestly hope they do. Arrow’s cast was fantastic, and it would be nice to see some others return including Rene Ramirez.
