Star Wars Rebels Season One Throwback Review

I won’t lie to you, I wrote Rebels off before I gave it a chance, I jumped into the show when I stumbled across a Rebels Season 2 episode review in one of my many Star Wars rabbit holes I tend to go on when I’m on YouTube.

After this review, I decided to give it a watch so Instead of jumping in at Season 2, I went back to the beginning and watched the entire series and caught up to the episodes releasing weekly.

I instantly loved the show. I remember seeing Kanan Jarrus, a Jedi who was “hiding” out. Then I got introduced to Ezra Bridger so I stuck around. Truth be told, I didn’t know what I expected to see in the first season however when I did see it, I was blown away.

Story

The story was amazing, although it did have slow points even that didn’t take anything away from the main story. We got to see what it was like for a Jedi to be hiding out away from the Empire.

Throughout the season we got many reveals like Ezra Bridger being force-sensitive, Kanan actually being Caleb Dune, and The Grand Inquisitor. We got to see Kanan take on the role of “Master” to Ezra when they go to a Jedi temple, Ezra does the trial while Kanan waits for his return.

In the temple, we got a very similar feel to what happened when Yoda trained Luke although this was many years later. We got to see Ezra experience the Darkside but eventually, we got to see him receive a Kyber Crystal and construct a very unique lightsaber.

Characters

First off, I’ll start with Ezra Bridger. Ezra started off as a street smart kid who would do anything to get what he wanted and would only look out for himself. He ran into Kanan and the team when he stole a crate of fruit from them. Right away Ezra got a weird feeling and so did Kanan. They both looked at each other.

Kanan Jarrus, Kanan throughout the season trained Ezra Bridger to become a better padawan, learning how to use the force, use a lightsaber, and to get some discipline. Kanan couldn’t truly teach Ezra until he finally spoke with Grandmaster Yoda.

The rest of the team consisted of Hera, Sabine, Zeb, and Chopper a droid. Hera was a great pilot and even showcased her abilities as a leader, while Sabine was a Mandalorian who wore Mandalorian armor, just very uniquely painted. Zeb was an alien, a Lasat who originally thought he was the last of his people. We also got the meet Chopper who had a personality of his own, often getting into trouble.

Action

The action was great, from blasters to lightsabers. The duels and gunfights, and even space battles were all top quality and truly felt epic. Especially whenever Kanan and The Grand Inquisitor fought each other. It truly felt like an animated Anakin/Obi-Wan duel. The end battle was the best battle of the season.

The end battle consisted of The Grand Inquisitor vs Kanan and Ezra. This was the moment Kanan fully reconnected with The Force once The Grand Inquisitor “killed” Ezra, although Ezra was knocked out for a moment, it pushed Kanan to be that much better in the duel and even had a moment like Anakin with the two lightsabers at his neck. Ultimately The Grand Inquisitor let himself die because of Kanan not knowing what he’d unleash at this moment.
