Season 3 for Marvel’s What If…? is scheduled for release on December 22nd, 2024, and has been confirmed to be the final season.
The series has been an interesting take on the MCU as we know, changing something ever so slightly which leads to a completely different outcome. We’ve seen Peggy Carter take the mantle, we’ve seen Killmonger be the one to save Iron Man and so many others. The series has been a unique and fantastic run and I’m excited to see the end.
if Disney does have any plans for the series moving forward I think Star Wars would do particularly well with it. It may not be as in-depth as the current Marvel version due to The Watcher and all of the episodes linking together. It could just be an episodic thing with each episode focusing on something different.
There are so many different scenarios we could look at. Here’s 5 on a whim;
- What if Luke Skywalker joined Darth Vader in Episode 5
- What if Yoda went to fight Anakin and Obi-Wan went to fight Palpatine in Episode 3
- What if Anakin’s mother survived in Episode 2
- What if Anakin won in Episode 3
- What if Luke Skywalker never went into exile after the incident with Ben Solo in Episode 7/8
I created that list in seconds and there’s so many more. I could be here all day writing about the top scenarios about what could happen.
Star Wars is one of those film franchises that so much could’ve been different based on a simple decision like Mace Windu trusting Anakin. A lot of these do fall into the Prequel series but it all makes sense.
Star Wars Theory has created his own theories about these particular scenarios but it would be nice to get George Lucas onboard to hear and see what his thoughts would be.
Star Wars hasn’t had the best run under Disney, often being hit-and-miss. This is one of those shows that could pique people’s curiosity above all else to see how things would’ve played out.
The only time we’ve seen an alternative play out is with the Revenge of the Sith game. If Anakin wins the fight against Kenobi on Mustafar, as he heads back to his ship he immediately kills Palpatine becoming the ruler of the galaxy himself. I adored this aspect of the game because it shows that Anakin had his agenda, even after pledging his allegiance to Palpatine. Whether or not this would be the actual what-if is another question but it was interesting to see.
I know a series like this is very unlikely to happen. I’m unsure about how well What If…? has done in the grand scheme of things but I’d imagine after 3 seasons, ideas are probably running out as there’s only so much that can be done with a series like this. I do think Star Wars has a lot more scenarios than Marvel ever did.
Despite the uncertainty, they have the animators down, they’d need some voice actors, and some stories, and away they go. I’d love to see this happen down the line.
