Star Wars: The Acolyte “Destiny” Review

Season 1 Episode 3 – “On a mysterious planet, the tragic journey of two sisters begins.”

What I Liked

1. The episode begins with Osha and Mae on their planet as kids. We see the twins leave the fortress, something that is forbidden. We then get to see a young Master Sol keeping a watch over them. Honestly, the pacing for the episode and for this backstory in general is actually great pacing.

2. It seems like Osha’s community and family are all witches who use some “force” abilities. Mae wants this but Osha doesn’t want it. Their mother is teaching them how to use it and how to become a witch. I didn’t expect to see witches within this series.

3. We get to witness the ceremony where Mae goes through the ascension and receives the same mark that their mother has, although Osha is somewhat confused about what she wants she does agree to it but it is interrupted by the Jedi.

4. Seeing the difference in how the Jedi recruited padawans back in the High Republic days seeing how they recruited them in the early days of the Jedi in the Skywalker Story and then seeing how the Empire “recruited” kids is so immense to see. You get a sense of how bad it truly got to have a Force-sensitive child with the Empire around.

What I Disliked

1. The lack of action within this episode has been disappointing. I feel like seeing this Witch community and seeing little to no action has made these witches feel underwhelming.

2. I feel like this episode could have switched back and forth between flashback and present-day scenes. I don’t think it needed to have an entire episode of the backstory. It could have simply been Sol and Osha speaking about it.

Favorite Moment

My favorite moment would have been Mae setting the community on fire. We get to see how attached Sol gets to Osha right away when he manages to save her from falling to her death. I am curious as to who killed the witches as I didn’t see any lightsaber marks on them, did Mae truly kill them all?

Standout Character

Honestly, I’m going to give this to Mae. I feel like she always had a dark side to her, giving her attachment to her sister Osha, and her mother. I feel like since she managed to kill everyone in the witch community, I feel like this has made her an interesting character.

Verdict

Although the pacing of this series so far has been decent, the build-up to the backstory of Osha and Mae has been at a steady pace, however, this episode was by far the slowest episode to date. While the backstory was very much needed, I do believe it didn’t need to be an entire episode. The lack of action also hurt this episode.
