Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker Final Trailer Analysis

The much-loved saga is at an end and with the release of the final trailer I am filled with excitement and nerves at the battles ahead. Will we get the sci-fi drama and action we all know and love?

Will there be more Jedi?

Will we get another Yoda jumpscare?

Will Poe Dameron marry me?

All excellent questions which the trailer brought to my attention!

There was Kylo-Ren looking as evil as ever. Some lovely dramatic weather complete with some good-ol’ blaster noises. Heart-wrenching shots of Carrie Fisher. Rey being a general badass and C-3P0 making me feel things I did not sign up for.

Overall the trailer gave us an adrenaline-filled taste of the final instalment of the beloved saga. There were faces, new and old that I believe are worth discussing.

Firstly, the Elephant Palpatine in the room.

His laugh was at the end of one of the trailers but it appears he has returned. There is a moment where it looks like Rey and Kylo-Ren are battling a black-cloaked monster. Perhaps, this is an apparition of a mind-trick but with the voiceover, it leads to a very promising idea of the emperor making an appearance.

The logistics of this and reasoning are still up for debate but hey, it’s Star Wars and if the last movie told us anything it is that anything goes.

Strong Female Characters

The presence of an empowered Rey gives me hope that the series will indeed end on a rebirth of the Jedis; much like the last movie focused on the rebels living on. The magic of the force was gravely missed in the last movie so any remnants of a positive presence of the force would be welcome by me.

The scenes of Carrie Fisher definitely struck home with me. It makes my heart hurt but it seems only fitting the saga should end and she be there in spirit. As the trailer was released on her birthday (21st October 1956) it seems like this film will be in homage to her once more.

Everyone’s favourite space-angsty teen is back in black and looking distressed in the rain. Probably, listening to My Chemical Romance in his downtime, the personification of evilness and great hair is back to convert Rey to his side of the force or to send her to her doom. Or take her out, on a date or with a sniper – surprise me!

Despite, the romantic leads of the last movies the trailer is suspiciously blank when it comes to possible partnerships. This might be a good thing, given that the Rose and Finn pairing didn’t go down well and blessed, beautiful Poe Dameron was not paired with anyone.

Rebel-Rebel

Horses? Ah, yes. Space horses – seems logical indeed. I am there for seeing a more fully-formed rebel alliance. But given the almost utter obliviation of the rebel forces, a decent time skip would be needed to see this through.

C-3PO: The Last Stand.

The golden-boy of the series hit our hearts hard patting R2D2 on the head whilst seemingly preparing to face the end. I’m sure that is for a scene that will have all Star Wars fans in tears.

However, the presence of C-3P0’s red eyes in the trailer has given fans hope for the droids memories to be returned. After the formation of the Galactic Empire, Bail Organa had C-3PO’s memory wiped in order for the droid to not possess any confidential information in fear that it might end up in the wrong hands.

Director JJ Addams has spoken about giving the series a “cohesive” ending – yet, I am sceptical. The last movie started a war of controversy among hardcore fans. It created a division between those fans who thought was a hilarious take of the series and others regarded as a travesty.

After going to a midnight showing of The Force Awakens followed by The Last Jedi and I am afraid to say I did not enjoy it. I was left feeling gutted by how Luke had died, how Rey made very little progress and to how the plot centred around something as mediocre as fuel. Thus for me, I am not sure if a strong enough redemption can be given in order to get things back in a way that makes me think “Yes. This is Star Wars.”

Not, “Oh good grief. Has Star Wars just put me off milk?”
