Stargirl “Summer School: Chapter One” Review

Season 2 Episode 1 – With summer break around the corner, Pat suggests the family take a vacation; Beth stumbles upon a major secret her parents have been keeping from her; Rick secretly tracks Solomon Grundy after suspecting he may still be in the area.

What I Liked

1. I’m not entirely sure what’s going on in this first scene, chances are it will be explained later but how dark and creepy was it! Had my eyes completely glued to the screen and the acting from the kids was incredible! I can’t imagine it’s easy at that age to be able to pull off such a creepy scene like that. A great opening to our second season.

2. Whenever we watch a series we go through the standard thing of watching them develop their powers and becoming a hero. I like that this show has touched on how this has affected Yolanda. She went from a typical high school student, bullied and humiliated to see the deaths of others. It seems she may be suffering from PTSD, which of course would be completely understandable. But you don’t see this often so I like how they’ve touched on it!

3. I mentioned before how they touched on PTSD with Yolanda but I think they’ve done pretty well at touching on the mental health of all teens. Courtney was clearly suffering from Paranoia and was struggling to believe nothing was going on, Beth appeared to be isolating herself while Rick was obsessing over Solomon Grundy.

5. The return for Cindy was pretty interesting but I did expect it. It seems she will be gathering and leading a new team, and another thing I noticed was she placed a picture of Pats son on the table which has really got me intrigued.

What I Disliked

The episode was quite slow, with not much going on so for a large chunk of it I was pretty bored. I was trying to remain open-minded as after the finale of last season I suppose you can’t expect too much to happen immediately afterward.

Favourite Moment

A great reveal for Green Lanterns’ daughter as a fight breaks out between her and Courtney. The fight was quite equally matched and neither seemed to overpower the other.

Standout Character

Only because we saw more from her character than any of the others I’m going to give it to Courtney. I can imagine how on edge you would be after a bunch of grown-ups have recently tried to kill you.

Verdict

A lot of suspension in this episode which I appreciate. I do wish some parts were slightly more interesting as I was bored throughout the majority of it. But it was a good build-up for the story.
