Supergirl “Kara” Review

Season 6 Episode 20 – Supergirl is joined by familiar faces from the past to help her stop Lex and Nyxly for good; Alex and Kelly prepare to walk down the aisle.

What I Liked

1. As Lena’s mother is dying on the table, we learn that she actually knew about Lena’s witchcraft powers. We also learn that she put up certain stuff around her so Lena’s powers wouldn’t manifest and would push her into science instead. A very emotional scene considering the history.

2. The CW speeches just continue AGAIN. Even from the last episode. This time Lena, Brainiac, and Supergirl work together to spread a message to every person in the world over to motivate them as they become more hopeless and helpless as Lex and Nxyly fight. Brilliant.

3. After Lex and Nxyly are drawn out of their powers, they decide to both call in reinforcements to fight against the Super Friends, this includes the Tornado and another Supergirl that looks as though they’re from Crisis on Earth-X. This is getting interesting.

4. Lex stupidly ends his own game early. He attempts to open a portal to the Phantom Zone to let the Phantoms in, but as the good guys stand strong and remain strong, the Phantoms then take Lex and Nxyly there instead. A short ending but I know it will be needed in order to end the show for good.

5. A beautiful send-off for William as they all attend his funeral, one that deserves the most amazing send-off.

6. Cat Grant makes a return on the back of everything else. She actually bought back CatCo. I really wish this did happen much earlier in the season, I would have much preferred this to be something included in the show. Especially that Cat has hired Kara as an Editor in Chief, without asking hilariously.

7. A lovely moment between Kelly and James before the wedding. Even nearly shed a tear myself when they tell each other how proud they are of one another. Even mentioning their dad which we all know how much James cared about him.

8. It’s always a pleasure hearing Melissa sing. As she sings a duet alongside Whinn to “We Belong” and it’s just as beautiful as always. I think it was obvious given the fact this is the last episode it was always going to be incredibly emotional. This includes J’onn’s speech as he stands into wed Alex and Kelly. It’s worth noting when the pair read their vows you may notice someone cutting onions close to you.

9. Cat Grant absolutely tears into Kara but in a hilarious way. She lets Kara know that she’s always known she’s Supergirl. Cat always had a knack for being motivational when she’s needed to. It’s what made her character more special. I’m glad that call happened because Kara is feeling more deflated than the rest.

10. Lena and Kara then have a lovely moment after. Lena inspires Kara to live without the glasses, to be herself once and for all. I like this, but it’s always something I would have loved to see at the beginning of the season.

What I Disliked

Nothing to report this week.

Favourite Moment

After the fight begins between the Super Friends and the vast array of reinforcements, we get our eventual returns. Mon-El shows up to save Supergirl, Winn is finally back and James shows up to help Kelly. Absolutely amazing and I couldn’t be happier to see all 3 of these again! Even Andrea has a moment when she saves Lena from Lex. What a scene!!

Standout Character

I’m not giving this purely for the fact it’s the final ever episode but Kara for me was standout. At the very end taking off her glasses and revealing herself to the world was admirable. It’s something we’ve never seen in live-action from a Super before so this alone was reason enough for me to call her standout.

Despite the overall show being rocky for a couple of years, we’re sure as hell going to miss Melissa Benoist as Supergirl.

Thank you for everything Melissa.

Verdict

A phenomenal ending to the show in general. Honestly, I nearly shed a tear on a few occasions because it was so emotional, I think even more so knowing this was the final ever episode. Despite the fact we haven’t enjoyed the show in quite some time, it’s still emotional to know this is it. We’ve invested so many hours into watching every single episode, it’s tough to know that this was the final ever episode. I truly hope we’ll still see Melissa suit up to some capacity in The CW in the future.
