Season 4 episode 21 “Kara comes face to face with Red Daughter and the two engage in an epic battle; Lena turns to an unlikely source for help; Alex realizes she’s missing parts of her memory; Brainy, Nia and J’onn set out to track down aliens who have been abducted.”
The Good & The Bad
The Good
1. Well, it’s the show before the finale. Supergirl has been shaping up to be an incredible ending to the season after a very boring start. As the show starts, we see Alex having memories of when her and Kara were young, and Kara was displaying first signs of her power. I’m so glad this has happened, it’s been fairly awkward Alex not knowing Kara’s Supergirl for the majority of this season.
At the end, Alex finally remembers on her own. I will get into that, and how she remembers as my review goes on.
2. A fairly emotional scene at the start which did hit home a bit. Kara escapes from being kidnapped by the president, and goes to J’onn for advice and guidance. She breaks down, asking for a way to let Alex remember who Kara is. Melissa’s acting ability during this scene was heart wrenching, it felt real, and it felt strong. I loved this scene, and it deserves a huge thumbs up.
3. Ben Lockwood, another character I found boring at the start, however I’m taking a serious liking to him. I’m pretty sure Days Gone (PS4) is playing a part in this. The injection he used begins to wear off, and becomes weak. Lena confronts Ben, making him aware he’s been working under Lex all this time. It’s not until he has a conversation with Lex’s lapdog with the Kryptonite vest that he finds out that Lex has truly been running the show all along. A quick fight pursues, and Ben takes the Kryptonite heart out of his chest. I liked this, will we see Ben redeem himself? I really hope so.
4. Brainiac, well, what the hell happened here? At the start, he’s shaking uncontrollably as he wants to tell Dreamer how he feels. Fast forward, they do a fake capture and get real captured. Bear with me…
As Brainiac is strapped to a chair, he’s hit multiple times in the head which in turn, Brainiac starts shouting sentences he’s perhaps used in the past? We even get a mention of the bigger, badder, more evil Brainiac, The Collector of Worlds. After he stops rambling, his entire persona changes. He breaks out of the chains, and just dismantles the guards so easily, showing signs of mass power. After this, he finds Dreamer locked inside a container, telling her he’s leaving her so she can go through the portal. With a lack of expression or sympathy, what is happening with him? After J’onn confronts him, he does some weird kung fu stuff and knocks him out, thus meaning J’onn joins Dreamer in capture.
5. With the Arrowverse, Supergirl definitely takes the mantle this year as the best ‘episode before the finale’. It felt stronger, and it’s got me so excited for the finale.
The Bad
1. A lack of Lex again is quite disappointing. After such an incredible build up, it would’ve been nice to see him again. Fortunately, we do have a lot of Lex in the finale.
Holy Shit Moment
Kara and Red Daughter, 1v1. What a fight. At the beginning Kara destroys Red Daughter, until ‘fake Kara’ whips out some Dragon Ball Z powers, and sends Kara flying, knocking the sunlight out of the sky, thus leaving Kara vulnerable. Red Daughter begins ascending huge blows to Kara as Alex shows up, this prompts Alex to begin remembering everything as every shot hits. Emotional. Kara survives just, be using the sunlight that lives inside the grass. Red Daughter seemed very anxious, and flies off before finishing the job.
Verdict
A solid, well written, and perfect set up for the finale. The episode delivered on all fronts. A lack of Lex brought the episode back slightly, but everything else fell into place perfectly. Supergirl is setting up have an incredible ending, from a very slow start.
