Superman & Lois “Always My Hero” Review

Season 4 Episode 3 – Reeling from failure, Jordan begins to spiral; Jonathan discovers newfound strength; Gen. Lane recruits John Henry and Natalie Irons, before making a choice that will change everything.

Please note, our reviews are based on likes and dislikes. These contain significant spoilers. If you haven’t already watched the episode, we recommend that you click off the article and come back once you have watched the episode. Enjoy!

What I Liked

1. We get to see when Lois and Clark tell Sam the truth. The fact they do this entire reveal for Sam to believe Clark only for Clark just to take his glasses off is hilarious.

2. John and Natalie are back after missing the first 2 episodes. It makes sense for these two to be the fallback option now Superman is deceased. I am happy to see John back above all else as he’s one of my favourite characters in this series.

3. Sam wants to train Jon and give him a team to work with. I do like this idea but I was initially hesitant about Jordan being left out. I’m glad Jon offered Jordan to go to the D.O.D. at the very least.

4. During the reviews this season I’ve talked about how sinister this version of Lex is. This continues even further this episode but in a worse way. When Lois receives the call from “Clark” last episode and is forced to choose which son to save – we find out she chose Jonathan. Lex turns up to the barn to play that recording to Jordan. I have to admit, the creativity is impressive from Lex, that’s utterly sadistic but beyond clever.

5. Doomsday heads for Sam after he’s shot by accident. Natalie and John suit up to try and intercept him mid-flight. They do fail after shooting rockets at him where Doomsday tanks them like it’s nothing. This episode gets better and better.

6. The flashback scenes throughout the episode have been very good as well. I didn’t want to put these specific scenes in individually but they do center around Sam being against Clark and Lois getting married. It comes full circle in the end though as Sam does finally give his blessing to them both. I’m usually not a fan of flashback scenes in The CW but these were very well done.

7. Honestly, the way Doomsday snaps Sam’s neck was not something I expected at all. Zero chill whatsoever. John takes him straight to the Fortress of Solitude where he’s met by Clark’s Mom. It turns out, Sam had injected himself after being shot which allowed his heart to be a donor for Superman. It’s very clever but I am concerned if this was the right way or not only because of Sam’s age. If someone can confirm in the comments that once the heart is in place, Superman will essentially de-age it? That’s my only concern although the scene itself was great.

8. Sam’s final holographic message to Lois was, well, I’m positive someone was cutting onions or perhaps dust was traveling through the room but I’m not crying, you are.

What I Disliked

Nothing to report this week.

Favorite Moment

JON HAS POWERS! It’s. About. Damn. Time!! I am overjoyed with this. What a moment. I do wish we saw them tell Lois but I’ll take it. Jonathan does go on a bit of an ego trip but to be fair, I understand it from his perspective. He’s had to watch his brother and father do unbelievable things with their powers and now he has them.

Standout Character

It has to be Sam. Out of the three episodes so far it’s been a difficult one to decide on the standout, there was simply no question here. Sam hit home and had me teary with his goodbye speech. A brilliant episode for Sam.

Verdict

Superman and Lois continue to deliver a spectacle. It feels very much like it did during season 1 and this is what I hoped for. Despite the fact the show was supposed to be plagued with budget cuts, they’re doing a pretty fine job if that is to be the case. Episode 3 hits another 10/10 for us which makes it 2/3 of the episodes so far.
