What I Liked

1. It’s great to see the fight again between Superman and Doomsday. The aura surrounding the belief Superman is dead is a weird one. We see Lois and the 2 children struggling to believe it and still have hope. It’s a solid opening for what I hope is going to be an incredible season. Even the follow-up scene after seeing Superman’s cape hovering is fantastic and looks great too.

2. Sam manages to escape from his kidnapper by undoing his ropes and slapping a headbutt on her. What a moment that was, I genuinely thought she was going to kill him then.

3. After Sam attempts his escape, Otis begins to bury him alive and Lex demands that the sand should be kept wet to make it even worse. I do really like this version of Lex, especially the brutal side of him. Jordan eventually hears him and takes Lois there to save him. The sheer panic in everything when it came to this scene was so well done. Lois even manages to get a swing in at Sam’s “date”.

4. When Lois gasps, I truly wasn’t expecting to write that her reaction is completely valid. Doomsday hasn’t just killed Superman, he’s dropped his body off back at the Kent’s with one vital human component missing – his heart. That was incredibly brutal but if you sequence that fight altogether into one lengthy scene, it’s exceptionally done.

What I Disliked

Nothing to report this week.

Favorite Moment

Doomsday and Superman’s fight continues with one hell of a moment in the last fight scene. Superman looks almost done, unable to continue whilst Doomsday’s onslaught doesn’t stop. As Superman is held against an asteroid, Doomsday goes for one more hit before Superman gives everything he can with his laser vision but it’s not enough. Doomsday travels back to Earth as Jordan hears him. This entire sequence was superbly done—Bravo to the writing team and the showrunners for this.

Standout Character

It’s Superman himself here. It’s difficult because all of the characters shown did stand out in their own way, especially Lois, Jordan, and Jon but the fight Superman had was by far one of the best fights in the entire Arrowverse/The CW superhero shows – for that alone, Superman was the standout.

Verdict

I was hugely skeptical coming into season 4 but if this is what we’re to expect for the final season then oh man, we’re in for a treat that’s for sure. This episode was phenomenal and it’s as easy as that. They didn’t beat around the bush, they got straight to it from where season 3 left off. Typically with The CW shows like this they time jump, similar to Arrow’s season 5 into 6 whereas here they didn’t, I loved it.
