Swamp Thing “He Speaks” Review

Season 1 episode 3 “Driven to cure the worsening epidemic in Marais, Abby searches Alec’s lab for a cure when her friend, Harlan, becomes stricken with the “green flu”; Swamp Thing uses his strange new powers to intervene, but he is desperate to find his humanity.”

What Was Good?

1. He Speaks kicks off with a vision from Swamp Thing, and the guy he murdered. We see Alec in his human form talking to him, he also puts Alec down and reminds him he will be coming back for him. After this, we see the severed body of the guy Swamp Thing torn apart. The arm moves as insects run around it. Questions arising already at the very beginning of the episode. Fantastic start.

2. It looks like the dude was right. He has reformed. Is this the main villain? A sniper is hunting when he approaches an animal with the similar insects to what we saw earlier, he’s then been reanimated. The scene cuts out but you know for a fact the hunter was just brutally murdered. Await the Holy Shit Moment to find out the answer to this question.

3. We begin to see a darker side of Avery. We also get to see he’s in a deep amount of debt. Interesting to say the least, he was built up to be this powerful strong person, yet he’s not. He then turns to Maria for help, until she stands up to him. She tells him she is not giving him any more money to waste on the swamp. Going back to my point, it looks like he’s relied on Maria’s money for years.

4. I like the fact episode upon episode we learn more about the disease, what’s causing it, what happens etc. This time we find out antibiotics fuel the disease. Mutating at a rapid speed. It’s basically as if they just have to accept it.

5. We get a moment where Abby and Matt have a slow dance in the bar. They look close, and we see Alec looking on from the outside. For me, personally this hit home. Purely because you can understand the pain and emotion Alec is going through. You truly feel sorry for Swamp Thing.

6. At the end of the episode we see Avery approach Gordon’s, (the bankers) house. They exchange words. You just know this is predictable, as Avery becomes increasingly more unstable. He literally pounds his head in with a golf club. Now one of the questions that is coming to mind, because of the instability. Was it Avery who shot and killed Alec?

What Was Bad?

We left on cliffhangers on the last episode. Yet Susie mentioning Alec to Abby is the only glimpse we have got nearly 15 minutes in. I didn’t really care for much at the beginning until we see Harlan fall ill with the disease affecting members of the town. Everything picked up from there.

Holy Shit Moment

1. Two holy shit moments this week. Shawna finally speaks to her mother. As she’s in the mirror, Shawna tells her about how unfaithful, and disloyal Avery has been to her. Creepy, but we finally got to see it is indeed Shawna. However, the question arises. Is it just in her head? Or is it real?
Queue the ultimate Holy Shit Moment.

2. As the weird reanimated dude goes for Abby. Swamp Thing just jumps through the floor. As the title of the episode suggested, he tells him to leave her alone. Man I was nearly jumping out my seat, this got me so excited.

Abby then hits him with an axe, and miserably fails. Instead of Swamp Thing just destroying him all over again, he tells the insects to release him, they abide by his request. Abby then tells him what Susie told her. Instead of just straight up answering, he touches her and a memory pursues of them two together. He then calls her name. This is just an incredible moment. A moment we’ve all been waiting for.

The Verdict

I am beyond devastated this show is ending after season 1, because this episode was incredible. There was so much to write about, so many emotions going along with it. Three episodes in and this was the strongest yet. I’m lost for words how good this episode was, the same with the show so far.
