It has been confirmed that Matt Reeves’ sequel to The Batman has been delayed. The superhero sequel was set to release on October 2, 2026, but has been delayed a year and will now release on October 1, 2027.
In response to the movie’s delay, James Gunn has made a statement and said the only reason for the delay is that there isn’t a full script ready yet.
Gunn said, “Matt is committed to making the best film he possibly can and no one can accurately guess how long a script will take to write.”
The movie had already been delayed due to the Hollywood Strikes. Had everything stuck to the original schedule when the sequel was first announced in January 2023, the sequel to the first Batman movie would have been in cinemas by now as The Batman 2 was initially slated for October 2024.
Furthermore, delays to the SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes meant the movie was delayed to October 2, 2026, pushing the release back a whole year.
Honestly, if this delay causes the script to be looked at, checked, and made to the best of Matt Reeves’ ability, I’m all for it.
