What I Liked
1. The fact that Homelander is claiming self-defense against Neuman is hilarious. “He threw a projectile at me”. It’s so minimal but I am glad to see the story connect and the repercussions that follow. I’m so happy this TV show is back.
2. Ah of course it would only take like 12 minutes to see an arm be torn off. I wouldn’t expect anything less at this point. Zoe, Neuman’s daughter is now a Supe which we saw her becoming last season. Kimono tries to save Frenchie and in turn, has her arm torn off. She then goes splat on the floor which is just lovely.
3. Is Victoria Neuman potentially the new major villain? Homelander has always been the belly of the beast but Neuman tanked a shot to the head and was barely bothered. Her power is ridiculously OP so is this the route the show is heading to? I’d like to see someone again challenge Homelander. It was great last season to see him meet his match with Soldier Boy finally, I hope we see this even more this season.
4. I found it fascinating when the Seven were hunting for recruits to join them after Starlight left. Homelander also fully tests his team after coming to the realization they’re a bunch of “yes men”, which is about damn time.
5. I didn’t think I’d ever see Homelander in civilian clothing. It only took 4 seasons, but seeing a more human side of him is nice. We see it more when Sage drops some home truths on him and he takes it. He doesn’t rage or get irritated, he genuinely sits there and listens. I’m more surprised she didn’t get lasered in half but I’ll take that, I enjoyed it.
6. Well, the new Black Noir just one-shot Todd with a baseball bat. Homelander set up his “biggest over the top” fans to be essentially executed. That scene was brutal.
7. Ah the octopus has a voice now. Of course it does.
What I Disliked
Nothing to report.
Favorite Moment
We get a great see as Homelander is found not guilty, the Starlight side and the Homelander side begin to riot as a result of Sage setting this up. This scene’s a lot to unpack, but the action tops the lot. Seeing Kimiko and MM join in to try and stop the violence by being violent is incredibly ironic but the scene itself was fantastic.
Standout Character
I’m giving it to Homelander in the opening episode. This is down to the fact we’re seeing an entirely different side of Homelander in this episode. He’s becoming more human, more open to actually listening which isn’t something we’re used to seeing from Homelander.
Verdict
A perfect opening episode to the brand new season. I thoroughly enjoyed the first episode and I’m intrigued to see how the story plays out. There was never any doubt that Prime would smash it again and they’ve proven already why they’ve won 2024 when it comes to TV, and that’s a bold statement considering at this point – I’ve only watched 1 episode of the new season.
