What I Liked
1. The episode begins with a Zack Snyder-inspired movie focused on the Supes of this world titled “Dawn of the Seven”, it’s a movie that sees the Vought Supes taking on Stormfront, played in the movie by Charlize Theron. It was pretty decent.
2. Frenchy and Kimiko go to a party to find a Supe. The Supe they are looking for can shrink himself down to a tiny size. He’s taking drugs and “getting busy” with another man. We see a very disturbing scene of the Supe shrinking, climbing into the man’s penis and accidentally sneezing and growing back to normal size, exploding the man apart from the inside. This scene was brutal, shocking, and unexpected. The Boys never fail to turn up the blood.
3. The parallels between Butcher and Homelander are noticeable. Butcher, is on the straight and narrow. He’s protecting Becca’s child while doing everything by the book. With Homelander, he’s getting asked the same question over and over again, you can tell he’s hurting inside, depressed, angry, and lost.
4. Queen Maeve working with Butcher? I like this duo, especially if they are going against Homelander. This duo could be a formidable opponent for Homelander. Especially now Maeve has given Butcher Temp-V which grants him powers for 24 hours.
What I Disliked
35 minutes into the episode and the only action we’ve seen is a Supe crawling into a penis and exploding the man, instantly killing him. I thought the first episode would have been nothing but action.
Favorite Moment
My favorite moment was when Hughie finally finds out about Victoria, the person he is working for. He sees her getting into a fight with someone who has been calling her Nadia. He then sees her use her powers to explode parts of this guy’s body. It was a gnarly scene.
Standout Character
I’d give this to Homelander. Throughout the episode, you could tell he was trying his best to keep his temper in check and it came out when he was close to attacking A-Train.
Verdict
Overall a solid start to season 3. While the action wasn’t a major factor of the episode, the setting of the groundwork for the season was a major part. By this first episode, I can already tell that this new season will be a bloody season.
