The Boys Season 3 Review

Overview

Going into this new season of The Boys, I watched one trailer and pretty much stayed away from anything else that was released. I had a few thoughts about what the upcoming season would be like, but when I began watching it, I didn’t fully have a grasp of what I was watching.

Right from the get-go, this season was fantastic, I absolutely loved it from the first bit of blood the series shed. The series looked fantastic from the trailer and it was delivered immediately in the first episode. One of the main reasons I knew this season would be fantastic is simply because previous seasons were crazier, bloodier, and more brutal than the previous.

Going into the season you just knew for a fact that Butcher and the gang would be going hard after Supes. At the beginning of the season, he was actually “tame” for what Butcher normally is. He was actually working smart. Until he began taking the Temp-V which kicked him and his character into overdrive and absolutely brutal.

You got to witness a lot of characters grow throughout the season, mainly Maeve, Noir, Butcher, and Kimiko/Frenchie. What I do want to talk about is Noir (I’ll explain more in the character section), this season did his character so well.

This season while a lot of people grew as characters in a good way, We finally got to see Homelander derail and slowly lose his temper throughout the season to the point where he basically said “f**k it” and killed in front of the civilians who loved it.

A fine addition to the series was Jensen Ackles who came in as Soldier Boy. I feel like his character, his presence, and just humor brought new life to the series which could have gone either way but luckily it was the best way.

Characters

The Supes: The Vaught supes were incredible, as per usual. We had some huge moments for basically the main supes, Starlight, Homelander, A-Train, Noir, and Maeve. The only supe I wasn’t truly caring for was The Deep until the final episode.

The Boys: The Boys also had a fair bit of development this season. You had Butcher who was taking Temp-V and Hughie followed in his footsteps until the final episode. You had MM whose story revolved around Soldier Boy and was truly interesting to witness. Frenchie and Kimiko were their usual selves but with some moments of development and backstory that stood out to me.

Soldier Boy: as previously stated, Jensen Ackles debuted as Soldier Boy in this season, and what an addition to the series. From the moment he debuted he was funny, brutal, witty, and just a giant asshole. His performance and interactions with Butcher and Hughie were hilarious.

Noir: Noir was a special character this season. While this character doesn’t speak, this season made him speak loudly. What I mean by this is his way of speaking about Soldier Boy and his past. How, in Noir’s mind, is just full of cartoons that are there for him, to take care of him and to see him survive. It was honestly a special way.

Standout Character

While I could name like 5 characters that deserve the standout title this season. I will not do that. I feel that this man truly deserves this category alone. His performance throughout the entire season was scary, sadistic, incredible, and downright brilliant.

Homelander.

Homelander this season was brilliant. Each scene was incredible. I kept becoming more and more of a fan with each scene but what stood out to me was the scene where we got to see his true self. We got to witness the “good” side, and I say that in quotations because that side also does terrible things but we got to witness the true evil side of him when he spoke to that side in the mirror. This entire scene truly made Homelander stand out.

Favorite Episode

My favorite episode would definitely be “The Instant White-Hot Wild” this was a tough decision to make as the season had 5 episodes in a row that received a 10 rating. I’ll go with this episode because it was the finale, and it was just amazing.

Worst Episode

Barbary Coast would take my worst episode. By no means was it terrible but it didn’t have a lot of action but the story did truly save that episode. It was an episode that received the same rating as episode 2 but to tell you the truth, both were good at the end of the day.

Episodes & Their Ratings

Episode 1: Payback – 9.4/10
Episode 2: The Only Man in the Sky – 9.2/10
Episode 3: Barbary Coast – 9.2/10
Episode 4: Glorious Five Year Plan – 10/10
Episode 5: The Last Time to Look on This World of Lies – 10/10
Episode 6: Herogasm – 10/10
Episode 7: Here Comes a Candle to Light You to Bed – 10/10
Episode 8: The Instant White-Hot Wild – 10/10

Average rating – 9.7/10

Our Overall Rating: 10/10

Honestly, if I hadn’t rated in our structure that we have in place, this season would have been a straight 10/10 season. I enjoyed the season so much that I can not wait for season 4 or the spin-off series. They truly nailed each part of this season. This is one of the reasons why I have full faith in the showrunners and writers for this series.

Does It Deserve Another Season?

Does it deserve another season? It NEEDS another season, maybe another few seasons. Still, plenty of stories left to go, and I can not wait to strap myself in for the wild ride that is about to happen.
