The Mandalorian “Chapter 21: The Pirate” Review

Season 3 Episode 5 – The people of Nevarro need protection from rampant pirate attacks.

Please note, our reviews are based on likes and dislikes. These contain significant spoilers. If you haven’t already watched the episode, we recommend that you click off the article and come back once you have watched the episode. Enjoy!

What I Liked

1. Quite an explosive start, literally. Greef, High Magistrate is attacked by the Pirate Nation due to what happened when Din took out multiple Pirates. The Pirate ship begins hailing down heavy artillery and missiles into the city. That was actually terrifying.

2. Zeb makes an appearance from Rebels!! Greef requests assistance from the New Republic. This message does get to the Republic and Zeb is just chilling there. This has been confirmed to be Zeb as the voice actor reprised his role as the character. I love the fact we’re getting more and more characters from the animated shows into live-action. Ahsoka, Zeb and we’ll eventually be getting Ezra.

3. During the movies we always see the Rebellion/Resistance/New Republic in a good light. Heroes, in fact. However, this is now the second time we’ve seen them in a bad light. The message is received by a superior officer in the New Republic who basically rejects to assist Nevarro due to it not being a member planet knowing full well what Moff was capable of. Elia Kane was obviously pushing the rejection through, we know she’s not who she says she is.

4. As predicted. Carson Teva’s request is rejected so he instead heads to Mandalore for assistance. That’s easily the best way forward considering Din Djarin is there. He’s almost killed due to the secrecy of Mandalore but he does get the help he requires from Din Djarin.

5. Din Djarin requests assistance from his fellow Mandalorians. It’s really great to see how it works when it comes to choosing what fights to fight. It makes it even better that Paz Vizsla decides to help Din Djarin, considering how many disagreements they’ve had.

6. Din always knows how to make an entrance and oh boy he does again. The pirates are basically all drunk having essentially won the fight against Nevarro already. Mando swoops in with that beautiful ship and begins to take out the cannons before taking out the individual pirates. I like the fact he’s doing this because Greef offered him and his people land. I like Nevarro so I hope this is where they relocate.

7. Paz dropping in on it to save the other Mandalorians who are boxed in by the pirates is terrific. This entire episode so far has been a masterpiece.

8. We even get to see the Armorer in action. It’s not often we see her even get involved in the conflict but she took out the squad of Pirates attacking the ground troops.

9. Greef announces part of the planet is now the Mandalorians. It was such a touching moment knowing they finally have a proper home instead of a desert hut.

10. Bo-Katan is told by the Armorer to remove her helmet, this is down to the fact she “walks both worlds”. The mission is she can bring together all tribes of Mandalore in order to retake the planet. I am curious as to where this will go with the show but so far this is a good move.

11. It turns out Moff Gideon never stood trial. He’s still alive. He also escaped the prison transport. This is getting super interesting. More so considering that it seems the Mandalorians will be getting the blame for this.

What I Disliked

Nothing to report this week.

Favorite Moment

Seeing the Mandalorians drop from Bo-Katan’s ship and take out the pirates was unbelievably beautiful! The way they stood together and fought is great. I love how we’re seeing this more and more in the current season.

Standout Character

Surprisingly I’m giving it to Paz. He stood out for me for 2 reasons this week. The first reason is that he actually agreed with Din to help Nevarro, something you fully expected him not to do when he began his speech. The second reason is the drop to help his fellow Mandalorians. It was perfect.

Verdict

There was a lot to love about this episode. It had a bit of everything in it that you would expect from The Mandalorian considering its very high expectations anyway. I was truly blown away from the very first minute through to the end, more so considering how the show is setting up the villain side of things.
