The Marvel’s Movie Review – A Superhero Hangout Movie

Carol Danvers gets her powers entangled with those of Kamala Khan and Monica Rambeau, forcing them to work together to save the universe.

This movie review will contain spoilers!!!

Overview

The first official team-up of Carol Danvers aka Captain Marvel and Kamala Khan aka Ms. Marvel with the third superhero in the movie being Monica Rambeau. Ultimately this movie falls short of marketing to the point where I even forgot about it.

In the film, Danvers, Rambeau, and Khan team up as “the Marvels” after they begin swapping places with each other every time they use their powers. The film underperformed at the box office, grossing $206 million worldwide against a gross production budget of $274.8 million which made it the lowest-grossing film in the MCU and one of the few MCU films not to break even in its theatrical run.

Story

Honestly, I didn’t have the highest hopes for the story of The Marvels. Especially seeing the Ms. Marvel series. I was right to not have those hopes as the story in this movie was the typical “You destroyed my world in a war so I’m out for revenge”.

The plot of the movie was simply the villain arriving, causing danger, and getting revenge for her world, Hala. One of the plot details for the movie was the villain essentially using the jump portals to transfer elements to her world. We saw her take water and she wanted Earth’s sun too. I thought this was pretty decent, especially seeing the elements go through the jump portals.

Ultimately, the story falls flat. The story falls on the villain’s plot and her morals. It ended up not making sense at all. One minute she wants to save her world, and Carol offers to reignite the sun, when Carol goes to help the villain, she turns and attacks Carol. I just didn’t understand that.

The story is not a memorable one, to say the least, I think overall the story is a superhero hangout movie which can be a bad thing. I believe that most people will only talk about the post-credit scene and if they leads to anything else in the near future.

Characters

The three main heroes Captain Marvel, Ms. Marvel, and Monica Rambeau were all great. No one outshined anyone, no egos overshadowed the cast. They were great, they really bounced off of each other and I can honestly see their characters coming together again.

Nick Fury was more funny, he had more life in him compared to how we saw him in Secret Invasion. Kamala’s family also returned while they were funny, they didn’t truly serve anything to the plot of the movie.

The Villain was weak. Her motives were flipped throughout the film which let her down. I wish she had a better plot, better writing, and better scenes. Her character felt very old. What I mean is that she used a long feud to fuel her motive, she used Ronin’s weapon so she didn’t standout on her own.

Hype

Honestly, after watching the movie, I can see why the hype was barely there for this movie. I feel like most of the hype came from the early screening leaks of the post-credit scene and afterward when people who didn’t look at the leaks went and saw the movie for themselves.

I believe, that a lot of movies will fall into this category, this movie was hurt by the strikes. While I’m not saying the strikes were wrong in any sense, I do believe actors and studios not being able to talk about upcoming projects and marketing them helped the box office totals.

Favorite Moments

1. The Khan house fight. This entire scene was amazing, the action within this fight sequence was top-notch, and the camera work and the swift replacement of characters worked perfectly. This scene was only made better by the funny dialogue from Kamala.

2. The cat scene. On Fury’s space station, everything is going wrong and they need to evacuate the ship. There are too many people to save but while there is a panic going on, Goose the cat has laid eggs and more of his species gets born so what is the logical step? Use the cats to swallow everyone and get them back to earth since it’s easier to evacuate the cats.

3. The villain causes a rupture between realities up in space. The only way to stop it is to close it, from the inside. Rambeau uses Kamala’s and Carol’s powers to be able to close the hole from the other side, stranding her in the process. It was a really cool scene visually and it showcased just how well Rambeau adapted to the powers.

4. After the events of the movie, Kamala gets inspired by the team-up so she sets out to form a new group of young heroes, starting with fan-favorite Kate Bishop with Hailee Steinfeld returning to the role. I’m excited to see what this leads into and more importantly, when this leads into.

5. The post-credit scene. Rambeau awakens in a parallel universe where she is greeted by an alternate version of her mother Marie, going by the superhero name Binary. They get interrupted by the mutant scientist Hank McCoy, aka Beast. Played by Kelsey Grammer who returns to the role from the X-Men movies.

Dislikes

1. Story. The story absolutely lacked in terms of having a connection to it. It felt like the story took a step back in terms of how it used to be regarding the Skrull and Kree. I feel like Secret Invasion finished the story regarding both races and that the overall feud between them was done.

2. The villain. Dar-Benn is a leader who is trying to restore the Kree world of Hala after the Civil War. She did nothing for me to care about her or her motives. There is one point where Carol offers to reignite her world’s sun but she attacks her immediately. It felt like her motives were not clearly set. She is also wielding the Universal Weapon, which was held by Ronan the Accuser in Guardians 1.

3. The world of Aladna and the Prince. This world was an entire world that spoke only by song and dance. It was cringe, it was boring, and just hard to watch. Not to mention that Carol is literally married to the prince.

Recommend?

Honestly, I would recommend this. While the story is lackluster, I know people will still see it for that and that’s fair. If you like action, this movie doesn’t lack in any regard in action. Right from the start the action is there.

Verdict

This movie absolutely 100% falls into the realm that is “not as bad as people made it out to be but not as good as it should have been”. While the story is sort of flat and at times boring, the action is great. The fight scenes are great. The villain, however, is very weak. This is definitely a superhero hangout movie.
