The Penguin “After Hours” Review

Season 1 Episode 1 – “The death of Carmine Falcone and a post-flood crime wave motivates Oz Cobb to fill the power vacuum left in the criminal underworld of Gotham City, while Falcone’s children attempt to keep their family together.”

Please note, our reviews are based on likes and dislikes. These contain significant spoilers. If you haven’t already watched the episode, we recommend that you click off the article and come back once you have watched the episode. Enjoy!

What I Liked

1. I still find it absolutely insane how great the prosthetics look on Penguin. The transformation that Colin Farrell has to go through just the play this character is insane. It’s truly amazing.

2. Oz is explaining to Carmine’s son about his father and how he died from a heart attack and this is when Carmine’s son realizes that he’s now living Oz’s dream. This is when we see Oz turn. Oz puts a few bullets into Carmine’s son, just one more step to becoming the king of Gotham.

3. Oz could have killed this kid Victor, but I think Oz saw something in Victor that reminded him of himself when he was younger, a kid who got into trouble but wanted more from life. I think Oz will help this kid to give him a sort of better upbringing than he did, although it would be in crime.

4. I can see why Oz wants to become king. He’s being owned by “The Family”. A family that’s higher and seemingly more powerful for now. They want to shut down the operation that Oz is in control of. I wonder what he’ll do to get out from underneath the family.

5. Cristin Milioti as Sofia Falcone is such a fantastic casting. Seeing her portray this innocent-looking character with a side of crazy which was sort of hinted at throughout the episode was great. She’ll be a character to watch throughout this season.

6. Sofia comes after Oz because of her brother being missing. Oz can not get in contact with Victor and eventually, Sofia’s men catch up to Oz. He manages to kill one but ultimately gets captured. Oz tells Sofia that the kid is lying so Sofia straight up murders the kid.

What I Disliked

Nothing to report.

Favorite Moment

My favorite moment would be Oz making a bold play. Oz goes to visit Sal in prison and offers him a chance to become a big player within Gotham. He explains his plan and Sal refuses until Oz gives him his ring back that Carmine disrespected.

Standout Character

Obviously, the one and only, Oz takes this. This episode literally showcased him in a new spotlight.

Verdict

The first episode of the season lays the groundwork for what is to come throughout the remaining episodes. The quality matches that of The Batman and you can tell that this is just after the events of that movie as the fallout is still there.
