Titans “Blackfire” Review

Season 3 Episode 4 “Dick breaks Jonathan Crane out of prison. Koriand’r and Gar try to find the source behind Kory’s visions.”

What I Disliked?

1. The beginning of the episode showcases just how much Red Hood is actually in control, he has people everywhere, he has someone inside of Arkham attack Crane to put a plan in motion to free Crane because we, later on, find out he actually helped him become what he has become.

2. This next point I absolutely loved, this next scene you could truly feel the emotion from Conor as well as Dawn, Dawn telling Conor that it wasn’t their fault but it was their fault to try to save Hank, you could absolutely see Conor beating himself up because he wasn’t fast enough, going as far as to compare himself to Superman saying that Superman would have saved him, Gar tries to speak to him but Conor snaps at him saying “great advice from a green tiger”. Just an emotional scene.

3. Gar is just trying to help everyone he can in the mansion, he’s cooking a pizza in the kitchen when Kory walks in and just starts blasting fireballs at him, Gar thinks quickly, and dodges a few attacks but gets hit on his arm, he quickly takes down Kory who comes through and can not remember a thing about it, she tells Gar that she had another vision so Gar helps her but it kind of backfires when Kory blacks out and puts Gar in a trunk and gives him a black eye and is in the middle of a field.

4. Dick gets told from Barbara that Crane is being moved to Blackgate as protection, Dick being a smart man, knows that this is a plan by Red Hood to get Crane, so he goes and takes down the guards transporting Crane, he then kidnaps Crane and drives off with Red Hood watching on. We see that Dick takes Crane to a cabin in the woods where Jason knows because it’s where Bruce takes them to train and to survive.

5. Kory speaks with her sister, Blackfire. Blackfire is in a cell and is “property of the US government”, Blackfire wants Kory to kill her instead of her being a prisoner on Earth, the two sisters get into a fight with Kory getting the best of the fight, Kory and Gar find out that Blackfire is going to be spending “hundreds of years” in this cell, Kory and Gar go to leave when Kory breaks out her sister and then leaves. I want to know more of the backstory to Blackfire, why she was in that cell, what she’s doing on Earth, and more.

6. I absolutely loved the scene where Dick was explaining his backstory to Crane, playing Crane while he was at it, and the flashback we saw made this story even better, it was in the woods where Dick was alone being chased by a wolf, using fear to play with Crane, and then he explains to Crane that he shouldn’t have been afraid of the wolf, because the wolf should have been afraid of him, this is where we see a young Dick holding a bloody knife and throws the head of the wolf on the table in front of Bruce.

What I Disliked?

My only real dislikes of the episode was the slow pacing at the beginning of the episode and that the story was more focused on Kory when Red Hood is a huge villain for the Titans so they should be more focused on him instead of Kory’s issues.

Favorite Moment

I have to say, my favorite moment was the Red Hood vs Nightwing fight at the end of the episode even though it was short, Just seeing the two characters go toe-to-toe in the nighttime scene with each character using their weapons, it honestly felt like an Injustice 2 fight.

Standout Character

Kory, I felt like she deserved it this week. She learned what was happening with her blackouts and freed her sister and willingly took on the responsibilities.

The Verdict

Overall a solid episode, continuing the amazing streak the past 3 episodes delivered is amazing to see. The episode began really slowly but picked up towards the end with the Injustice 2 style fight between Nightwing and Red Hood, It’s amazing to see just how smart both characters truly are.
