Titans “Prodigal” Review

Season 3 Episode 13 “After Nightwing and Red Hood’s battle, Rachel and Gar try to save their friend. Meanwhile, Jason questions his allegiance. With Barbara behind bars, Donna leads her own resistance operation, and Conner helps Blackfire recover her ship.”

What I Liked?

1. I love how we see Rachel using her powers to track and find the Titans. Her powers lead her to a dead Nightwing. She tries to heal him but it’s too late. I love that in the time of need, Rachel just wants to protect and heal her family. It’s been so great to witness Rachel go from this loner kid in season 1 to what she is now.

2. We have seen bats flying around all season, mainly around Gar. He gets angry that Nightwing is dead, and we finally see Gar transform into a different animal other than a tiger. We get to see him transform into a bat, and fly Nightwing’s body with the other bats to a Lazarus pit. I loved this because it’s been so long since we’ve seen him transform into something new.

3. When Dick is thrown into the Lazarus pit, we get to see such a great vision. I mean unbelievable. We get to see Dick, speaking with Crane. The two foes speak about Dick, how he has failed everyone he loves and cares about, his friends, family, and more importantly, his father. Crane also mentions how Dick wanted Jason gone. This is where the vision becomes brutal, dark, and gritty. We see that Dick is dressed similar to the Joker, with a crowbar in hand. Without hesitation Dick begins to brutally beat Jason, after a little while, Dick snaps out of it.

4. This next point I liked because it showed a couple of things, firstly, it showed just how much Connor actually cares and loves Blackfire. This is fair because it’s his first love, we all have that one we care and love for. Next, it showed just how much Blackfire has him wrapped around her thumb. I mean this in a manipulative way. She’s using him as muscle, to force her way into the lives of people who have hurt her, like the scientist from earlier in the season.

5. This next point was the Tim/Donna talk about Tim becoming a hero by staying to fight for Gotham City. They speak about a few things like heroes, destiny, Hank, and how he would take a chance on Tim. While Donna disagrees. I absolutely love this duo of Tim and Donna, I think they will be very close once Tim becomes a fully-fledged Titan. Not to mention this is brought even more alive by the actors portraying the characters.

6. After Dick comes to the realization that there is still time to change Jason and the path that he is on. He comes back to the land of the living and goes to meet Jason. He speaks to Jason about Crane, him potentially killing more people. Jason asks Dick if he’s a Titan again, and I don’t know why but I just loved the bluntness, the straight-up answer “No, you’ll never be a Titan again, but you can help me in saving Gotham”. This is the Dick Grayson never give up energy I like to see.

7. This next bit doesn’t usually happen but it came towards the end of the episode when Connor is fixing Blackfire’s ship, the Lex Luthor side of his DNA comes into play and not just for the smarts but for the ruthlessness of Lex when he rigs it and explodes the ship, causing a huge explosion.

What I Disliked?

Nothing to report this week.

Favorite Moment

My favorite moment was when Dick was inside of the vision and he saw his father with a young Dick Grayson. We see Dick man up and tell his father that he lost his way and that he wouldn’t like the man he became. Dick’s father turns around and says “It’s ok son, I love you” before walking off. Dick also sees a small child who calls him “daddy”, this is a nod to Mar’i Grayson aka Nightstar.

Standout Character

I have to give this to Dick, he fully takes it this week. Nearly dying, going on a spiritual quest to see his father, his future child, and the beating he gave Jason inside of the vision. Not to mention him going face to face with Jason to ask him for help.

The Verdict

A solid second to the last episode with some huge character development for Gar. he’s on his way to becoming Beast Boy. The CGI and VFX for certain things in this episode were great, especially all the different environments. The story was amazing and the action was decent.
