Titans “Purple Rain” Review

Season 3 Episode 13 “It’s the season finale and final battle for Gotham between Scarecrow, Red Hood and the Titans!”

What I Liked?

1. At the beginning of the episode we see Barbara Gordon in Oracle. This is when we get to see Barbara Gordon’s right-hand man so to speak get escorted to the elevator to find Barbara, when the elevator opens we see that she has taken down the guards and informs Barbara that she actually works for ARGUS, more importantly, name drops Roy Harper. Does this mean we’ll see Roy Harper in season 4 of Titans?

2. Crane phones Dick and tells him that he’s placed bombs around the city and that how long will it take for him and the Titans to find them, more importantly, how many people will die. This is when Cranes viciousness comes into play when we see a bomb explode and fear gas kill hundreds of people. Crane has his moments in the season but when he’s walking through people who are dying and he’s wearing a modified Scarecrow mask was such a cool moment.

3. Dick sends Gar into Wayne Manor to disable the system, he tells him that the guards will be taken care of, so we get to see a window POV shot of a green bat flying towards it, I will admit, this made me laugh but it’s obviously Gar and what happens? He flies straight into it, this made me chuckle. While he’s disabling the system, Jason is holding off the guards in the hallway. Jason Todd is just amazing in this series.

4. This next point when it began to play out, I thought I’d dislike it but I actually really enjoyed it. We get to see a team-up between Rachel, Superboy, Starfire, Blackfire, and Donna Troy. The group plan to use the Lazarus Pit water to make purple rain with it being infused with Rachel’s powers. Superboy uses his freeze breath to create rain, and Donna holds the lightning back with her lasso. This scene was actually truly amazing.

5. After saving Gotham City, Dick is planning a road trip for the Titans. When he’s about to leave, Tim is with Donna, Donna whispers to him “I’d think you’d make a great Robin” to which Dick offers to bring him along, to train, to learn to master his skills as Robin. What an ending to season 3.

What I Disliked?

1. I get that throughout the episode and the past couple of episodes Donna and Dick learn that both of them are alive, but whoever cut the in-person reunion between the two needs to be fined. This would have been such an important reunion between the two, I would have loved to see it happen.

2. I knew this would happen, I knew I’d write about this. Crane, while being such a great villain mentally, physically he wasn’t quite suited, especially going up against the Titans. When he was taken down he was knocked out cold by Tim Drake with one punch. I wish he put up a tiny bit of fight physically.

Favorite Moment

While I would have chosen the Wayne Manor fight scene as my favorite, I just can not for the love of God ignore the ending. The reunion between Bruce Wayne and Jason Todd. This was such a powerful, emotional, and important scene. I absolutely loved the moment where Jason said to Bruce “Did you kill the Joker for me” and Bruce replying “yes”. I need to rewatch this entire scene again.

Standout Character

Jason Todd. I did originally choose Dick but the entire fight scene in Wayne Manor with Jason taking down multiple armed guards protecting Gar was amazing. Simple as that.

The Verdict

A really great finale for Titans season 3. The story and action were so great that I was surprised at truly how great the action was. Even in a finale, we had some major character development for characters such as Jason Todd, Bruce Wayne, Donna Troy, and Tim Drake. Bring on season four!
