Over the years, there have many hundreds of under-appreciated movies whether that be theatrical releases or straight-to-on-demand movies. I always understand that not everyone will like every film but the list I’m about to write about I always get confused at how they didn’t get better received.
Now, this list is my top 5 movies, I will always rate these movies highly whereas others may not, especially my number one and two picks.
5. Transformers: Dark Side of the Moon
Directed by: Michael Bay
Starring: Shia LaBeouf, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Tyrese Gibson
Year: 2011
Transformers is a franchise which to me if separated into categories of “Original” and “Reboot”. Some people loved it when Shia was the star and hated it when Mark Wahlberg took over. I loved it all. I notice that when people talk about the franchise, they tend to skip over “Dark Side of the Moon”. For me, this is the main movie that I get excited to watch each time. The story is great. The action is some of the best in the entire franchise. This also is the best acting performance by Shia in the entire first three movies.
4. The Meg
Directed by: Jon Turteltaub
Starring: Jason Statham, Bingbing Li, Rainn Wilson
Year: 2018
The Meg is arguably hated by most of the population on Earth for being a “B-movie creature feature or cheesy”. I absolutely love it. It’s a fun movie about the deepest darkest parts of the ocean and what lies beneath. It took a huge risk to take that one step forward in front of the typical shark movie and focused on the largest shark in history… the Megalodon. I am looking forward to the sequel which has just begun filming.
3. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
Directed by: Jonathan Liebesman
Starring: Megan Fox, Will Arnett, William Fichtner
Year: 2014
Simply put, the best live-action adaption for the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles of all time. Even better than it’s own sequel that introduced fans to a live-action Casey Jones. I personally believe that this is one of the best choices for a movie, the voice actors for the Turtles were cast so perfectly. Megan Fox was great as April O’Neil too.
2. Jumper
Directed By: Doug Liman
Starring: Hayden Christensen, Samuel L. Jackson, Jamie Bell
Year: 2008
Jumper is such a unique movie that focuses on a kid finding out he has the ability to jump to any place he can see. It didn’t even have to be real, he could simply look at a picture and jump there, he goes on to make a better life for himself. I think half of the reason as to why it gets hate is simply, Hayden. At the time of the release of this movie, Revenge of the Sith had been out for a few years and Hayden was on the end of a lot of hate for playing Anakin.
1. Power Rangers
Directed by: Dean Israelite
Starring: Dacre Montgomery, Naomi Scott, RJ Cyler, Becky G, Ludi Lin
Year: 2017
Power Rangers was ultimately on a downward path shortly after the first trailer. People couldn’t move away from their childhood spandex and clunky-looking villains. These people who hated the movie is simply wanted a 1990’s series on the big screen. I loved the fact that this movie took risks. It cast different ethnicities for the core rangers, it even took a big risk to include the spectrum for Billy. It gave light to the fact that Billy had autism. Each member had their own unique feature.
Is there any film that you think is under-appreciated let me know in the comments.
