There’s no denying that the world Marvel and Disney have created has been a fantastic and unforgettable experience. There have been many projects from movies to TV shows and everything in between. The vast majority of my own personal experience has been positive. This type of genre saved my life and that’s not an understatement either. I allowed myself to become invested, and it’s how I became a writer on these topics.
However, despite Marvel’s monumental success, it’s not without flaws along the way which is to be expected when you create a universe of this magnitude. Today, I want to examine my 5 worst Marvel projects in the TV/movie spectrum. These are of my personal preference only, I’m not speaking facts here.
5. Ms. Marvel
Before we get into this one, I’m a huge Ms. Marvel fan. I’m also a huge fan of Iman Vellani. What I’m not a fan of is the direction. They had the tone of the show nailed but the powers were a nonstarter right from the get-go. They had her use cosmic powers as an excuse for her to fit in with Captain Marvel. They also made her a mutant when she was supposed to be an Inhuman. It didn’t work for her character at all.
Kamala is supposed to be a humble teenager doing all she can to help. Her series didn’t explore this section enough in my opinion. Despite the tone being fine, the rest of it was quite a mess. It’s a shame as well because this deserved so much more.
4. Eternals
Eternals was trash regardless but now even more so. The next time you decide to do an MCU run-through, you may as well skip this film. We’re hearing the movie is set to be non-canon but I’m unsure how true that is. It should be. There’s a big-ass Celestial chilling in the ocean and yet it hasn’t been referenced or seen since? Maybe Thunderbolts will pick this up but it’s a little too late.
It’s another example of a project that if the right directors and executives were in charge of this, could’ve been better. Eternals had a lot of potential to further enhance the MCU, especially with the introduction of Starfox, Thanos’ brother. I do believe this movie was affected by the overdoing it from Marvel, releasing too many things in a short space of time causing things to become convoluted. I’m glad they’ve taken a step back since.
3. Black Widow
There are many reasons as to why Black Widow belongs on this list. Now don’t get me wrong, it isn’t the worst movie ever but there’s a lot that’s wrong with it. The timing of the release was during the pandemic and I think the movie suffered more as a result. The film was always destined for theatres but as the world shut down, Disney thought they’d release it on Disney+ at PPV which didn’t do well financially.
There’s also the time the film was set. It was set between the events of Civil War and Infinity War thus meaning we already know how Natasha’s story plays out. Had this movie been released around 2016/2017 then it may have hit a bit differently.
Finally, the film took the wrong direction in general. Taskmaster was a disaster and this is the beginning of the movie’s downfall. The best thing to come out of this film was Yelena and that’s about it. I still believe that Scarlett Johansson deserved more.
2. She-Hulk: Attorney at Law
There are only two shows on this planet that you couldn’t pay me to watch. One of them was The CW’s Naomi and the next one was this. Quite literally a horrible show that was a cringe-fest all of the way through. Ruining Hulk’s character and even nearly Daredevil’s. Awful CGI, snooze-fest action, terrible story, it just wasn’t it. It’s as simple as that.
Plus, there are trust issues at Marvel right now with the fans. Love and Thunder began this but She-Hulk topped it off. It currently has a 32% audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes. That’s all you need to know about this one.
1. Thor: Love and Thunder
There’s no debating that Thor is one of the best MCU characters by a country mile. He’s been in it since the beginning but Love and Thunder wasn’t it. We came off the back of Ragnarok which was a beautifully put-together movie to this. A lot of people I spoke to really wanted to see an Infinity War version of Thor but instead, we got a Thor that couldn’t run a full line of dialogue without being filled with jokes. It took the immersion right out of the film and it didn’t help.
I wish Love and Thunder didn’t exist so it could be redone. It needed to be something dark and edgy considering everything Thor has been through. I have no issues with Natalie Portman returning, I’m glad we got to see her suit up but this could’ve and should’ve been a different angle. I don’t want to see a relationship form between Thor and the hammer/axe when this has never once been mentioned in any previous film. I hope we get a Thor 5 purely to redeem itself from this. If I do an MCU movie run marathon, this is the only film that gets skipped out – I even watch Eternals and that says something.
