Lucasfilm Games has officially announced that they will be partnering with Ubisoft in creating a huge open-world Star Wars video-game. The news was revealed by Wired and later backed up with a statement from Lucasfilm who mentioned the moment was a “big bang” for Star Wars games.
“We’re looking to work with best-in-class teams that can make great games across all of our IP.” “We’ve got a team of professionals here at Lucasfilm Games who can work with the developers, shape the stories, shape the creative, shape the games, to make them really resonate with fans and deliver across a breadth of platforms, genres, and experiences so that all of our fans can enjoy the IPs that they know and love.”

What about EA?
Well, this does mark the end of a 10-year exclusivity deal that is coming to an official end in 2023. However, EA are still to make future Star Wars games so it does seem as though the license won’t be an exclusive deal locking out other studios from making Star Wars games – which can only be a good thing for fans, right?
“We are proud of our long-standing collaboration with Lucasfilm Games, which will continue for years to come. Our talented teams have created some of the most successful games in the history of the Star Wars franchise, including Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, Star Wars: Battlefront and Battlefront II, Star Wars: Galaxy of Heroes and Star Wars: Squadrons. We love Star Wars, and we look forward to creating more exciting experiences for players to enjoy.”
EA’s official statement.
It does seem as though EA will continue through with their recently announced projects, and most definitely a sequel to the popular Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order – which sold over 10 million copies worldwide.
My thoughts?
They’re no different. Whilst I’m excited Lucasfilm Games is pushing for more studios to work on the games, it essentially means more games for me and I’m never going to complain about that. My complaint lies with the choices of studios.
Let’s look at it. EA has a terrible reputation among gamers, that’s a given. I don’t need to sugar coat that for you. However, Ubisoft honestly isn’t that far behind it.
Both developers have the potential to put out some fantastic titles but more often than not, they flop. Correct me if I’m wrong, but I don’t believe either studio has put out a game-of-the-year or even a contender.
Fallen Order was a monumental success for EA, and for fans like myself who had a blast playing it. Ubisoft for me personally has had a shaky year. They’ve put out Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla which I absolutely loved and pumped 80 hours into it, and Watch Dogs: Legion which I uninstalled after 3 hours because it’s straight-up trash.
So in the end, I’m nervous but more excited. I believe now Ubisoft has been given the green light for a game in the biggest franchise on the planet, I personally think it will be done right. It has to be.
Insomniac has set the bar way too high with video games, especially in this type of industry with their Spider-Man games, and rightly so. It proves what a studio can do when they think of their fans first instead of greed, and that’s the attitude they should go with. After all, this isn’t Watch Dogs, this is STAR WARS.
