What I Liked
1. This episode piqued my interest right from the beginning. Seeing Earth shattered the way it is, White Vision, the flying ship with Valkyrie in control, it’s barely been a few minutes and the setup is already better than every other episode of this season so far.
2. It’s great to see White Vision again, it’s also great to see how powerful he still is despite losing the infinity stone. He walks through the ship where the Alliance took Riri to build a weapon and he walks through everyone with such little effort. It’s impressive and it’s even more entertaining to watch.
3. After Riri defeats the White Vision, she takes his power which dons her a brand new suit. This is something I’d love to see in live-action, the suit looks beautiful.
4. I’ve always thought Mysterio’s powers were weak considering they’re not “real” but after Spider-Man and now this, it does showcase how powerful Quentin really is. He managed to imprison Riri with little to no effort. She literally walked into that cell on her own because of the genius intellect of Mysterio.
5. We’re now leading into the overall story of What If…? which every season tends to do. Due to The Watcher intervening with Riri, he’s now being watched by other watchers. I think this is now the plot of the third season ready to kick in which I’m excited about.
What I Disliked
Nothing to report in this episode.
Favorite Moment
Throughout the episode, The Watcher hasn’t been shy in letting us know that usually in this story, Riri dies. When the time comes, The Watcher explains that it’s this time and explains that he’s unable to bear to watch. As he begins to walk away, he turns around and tells her to fight back. She hears, and she does exactly that. I got goosebumps everywhere. What a moment!
Standout Character
Of course, the episode is centered around Riri Williams so she takes it. She didn’t just take standout because she was the focal point but because she was fantastic. I know a lot of people are pushing Iron Heart to one side but I believe Dominique Thorne will do incredible with the role moving forward.
Verdict
Easily and by far the best episode of the season. It had an interesting plot with an interesting backstory in the what-if moment. In this particular episode, it’s because the Eternals weren’t ready to take out Tiamut so he fractured the Earth and Quentin took over. This also feels like the episode that’s ready to kickstart the overall plot of the series which is a great feeling considering what we’ve had so far this season.
