What to Expect: ‘WandaVision’ Breakdown

Avengers: Infinity War (2018) saw a gruesome end to Vision (Paul Bettany) and consequently his relationship with Scarlet Witch, Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen). Yet the web television miniseries is set to air in December of this year (2020) and will focus on the romance between the two characters inside the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

I’m very glad to see these characters finally gain some well-deserved spotlight. Infinity War barely scratched the surface on the complicated relationship between the unique pairing. Everyone is excited for the exploration of The Falcon and The Winter Soldier and it seems to be taking prime centring in the Superbowl trailer too. Even the music used during the trailer is reminiscent of Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014). There is madness surrounding Loki’s own series. Hiddleston’s hardcore fanbase has labelled this show a masterpiece before even being streamed.

I really hope that this series stands its ground among these anticipated shows. I am ready to explore something different and to see Marvel’s take on a romance spanning many comics.

Here is a round-up of some of the things I noticed in the Super Bowl Spot trailer for Disney+.

1. Time Skips

We start with Vision telling a stunned Wanda “Welcome Home.” The scene is black and white and Wanda is dressed in a 1950s style. The divergence between Wanda and the rest of the reality imply that she is in an alternate reality or some kind of dream sequence where she lives a past she never had.

We see the pair move through the 1960s, 70s and 80s during the clip and with it, the fashion and house change drastically. This may be hinting at how this reality has been inspired by popular media. The 1970s house, in particular, seems somewhat similar to The Brady Bunch.

I noticed how this was very reminiscent of Doctor Strange’s world after the possibilities of changing reality shifted immensely. Perhaps this leads into the second Doctor Strange movie? Or perhaps Wanda sought help from strange in her despair. And as a result, she became part of that reality which we see her live out with Vision in the form of a sitcom.

2. Sitcoms

The use of sitcom seems to be very present in this trailer. The 1950s upright, common tropes are seen in the wedding and the stiff character roles seen in both Wanda and Vision. We see Wanda pregnant with presumably, the twins, which we encounter in the comics and the various enigmatic expressions from the pair of them definitely strike me as scenes typical to a popular sitcom.

The fact that Olsen is in fact the sister of the twins Mary and Kate Olsen who got their breakthrough the sitcom ‘Full House’ may be a reference to this. Also, I love how we get to see the popular styles at the time on the pair. Vision dressed in check. I love it. And Wanda’s hair! I love that too.

3. Babies

Bit of an odd one if you are not familiar with the comics. I think this show may actually focus on the parenting of the twins Thomas and William who grow up to be the heroes Wiccan and Speed.

If I do prove to be right then this may lead onto to something bigger for the heroes. Maybe to leading onto the Young Avengers?

4. Comics

Perhaps the most striking similarity is the X-Men outfit worn by Wanda. Perhaps a Halloween devil costume judging by the little cape but still a welcome sight nonetheless.

I cannot wait to see what this series brings us. I am ready for something different and even a little mind-bending. Hopefully, this will lead onto some stories for some lesser-known comic heroes too.
