There isn’t a lot of news around the God of War TV series at present but we do know Amazon is behind the ambitious project.
God of War has been around our gaming systems for nearly 25 years so there’s a lot of lore already set in place. Kratos has been the main protagonist since the beginning and I fully expect the series to follow this.
Ronald D. Moore, the man behind Battlestar Galactica is the confirmed showrunner for the series and that’s all I know so far.
I will say though and being completely honest, Ronald D. Moore not playing through the games is a small concern. We’re hearing he couldn’t use a controller which is fine, not everyone is a gamer and I do believe you can watch the game being played but I don’t know, it does feel like it’s one of those games that you need to immerse yourself into the experience. Of course, that just may be the gamer in me talking. I will hold out any judgements until we of course see some actual content from the series.
The series cannot become another Halo, Assassin’s Creed, or Resident Evil
All of the above failed among other adaptations in the past because they take too much away from the source material. The directors or showrunners typically attempt to place their stamp on the project so that it only fails. We only need to look at Fallout or Last of Us to know that sticking to the lore/source material is usually the first key to success.
God of War must do the same. It has to follow the source material otherwise, well, you have probably seen the backlash the Harry Potter series is getting purely based on casting decisions right now. There’s been no casting choices at the moment but there is a fair few solid choices for Kratos himself, including the unlikely Triple H.

There is a lot of lore to pick from but the Directors and showrunners need to first and foremost truly understand the games. They need to respect the games. If the showrunner doesn’t play the games himself then it would make sense to have some people involved in the games from Santa Monica Studios on hand to help direct the project so it stays true to lore and respects fans of the franchise.
Last of Us also proved that almost following the footsteps of the game works well
God of War could easily do the same. A second season is already teased so this could be huge, having each season dedicated to the individual games could work a treat.
I trust Amazon to do right by this above all else. After all, they’ve deserved trust in their TV series. They crushed 2024. Fallout, The Boys and Gen V were all incredible. I have high hopes for the Spider-Man Noir series and I am genuinely hopeful for this because of how good of a job they’ve done before.
The best God of War game is up for debate but the latest Ragnarok game was my favorite. I’m a huge fan of Norse mythology. This stemmed from Marvel of course but anything that has Norse within it, I’m intrigued. I even enjoyed Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla despite its shortcomings. The fact this is where God of War does eventually lead to could become interesting. It would be strange to see Thor in a proper historical setting compared to Chris Hemsworth’s version.
We’re still a ways away from release at this stage but I do hope they stay faithful to this incredible franchise. I’d love nothing more than to see Kratos in a live-action setting.
