Why Days Gone Deserves A Series

If you’re in the market for a zombie series right now, you’re spoiled for choice. The Walking Dead has 11 seasons as I write this and the video-game adaption of Last of Us has just embraced our screens.

Today I want to discuss the video game, Days Gone.

There is speculation that Days Gone didn’t do too well in sales although this has been disputed. It doesn’t help matters that the game came out in 2019 and nobody talks about a sequel. It even further fuels it that the game reportedly only did well once it became free for PlayStation users. There are rumors that Sony is going to develop this game into a series but as of now, it’s just a rumor.

I’ll say it, Days Gone is one of the best games I have ever played. The story alone is exceptionally done and gives you quite a bit in return for your investment of time and maybe money. I’ll go into further detail about the story shortly.

In terms of video game adaptions, these are often failures. This changed however this year with HBO Max released the Last of Us series.

The series was basically ripped straight from the game and this is something fans of the game preferred. It’s about time they took notice that we don’t like our games changed as it’s always generally worse.

This is definitely something Days Gone could go straight into. We already have our star man in Sam Witwer, who portrayed Deacon St. John, the main character of the game. This helps matters that Sam is also a live-action actor as well as voicing huge characters like Darth Maul in the animated series for Star Wars.

The game’s premise is very similar to Last of Us, although the zombies are slightly different. The zombies in Days Gone resemble those from I Am Legend although they can operate in the daylight.

These are just some of the reasons why the game deserves more recognition and a series. I’ve already mentioned how good the story is in the game.

It starts with the outbreak as does every zombie story. We see Deacon put his wife, Sarah, into a chopper after being injured. They then separate for 2 years. Deacon hunts for Sarah and believes she’s dead after the NERO camp she was supposed to be at was overrun by “Freakers”.

We see Deacon drift from camp to camp and doing what he can to survive but still maintaining this belief his wife is alive. There’s obviously a lot more to it than that. We see a section of the story focused on the Rippers which was interesting. This group slashes themselves and are just psychotic weirdos, to say the least. We see a General go off the rails despite recruiting an army. We see Deacon fight hordes of zombies solo. He was also part of a biker gang so he drives around on a motorbike for a lot of the game which is so damn cool. There’s a lot to unpack and it’s why a series would be perfect.

I think more than anything, the reason why I’d want a series so badly is so it rehypes the franchise and gives it a new lease of life, in the hopes that a sequel could one day go ahead.

I’ve played through the game a handful of times and each playthrough is just as enjoyable as the last.
