Why I Can’t Get Excited For Star Wars Outlaws

In fairness, when the EA license ran out for Star Wars, I got excited. This IP was distributed to different studios to stamp their mark on the franchise and in the video game world.

We had so many different projects announced at the time. Some studios have the rights to make their games in AAA format.

  1. Respawn – Jedi series
  2. Ubisoft – Outlaws
  3. Quantic Dream – Eclipse
  4. Embrace Group – KOTOR Remake (now canceled)

Star Wars is a franchise that can be made with so much fun when it comes to games, but there have been many failures in this franchise in particular.

Now, Ubisoft is a developer I don’t trust. Their games have been poor for years. I can’t think of a single stand-out game from them in a long time, it may be South Park: The Fractured But Whole for me.

For years it’s been mediocrity and they seemingly don’t listen to their fans. They release Assassin’s Creed games that are not based on assassins. Instead, we get a Greek game and a Vikings game. Far Cry 6 was pathetic as well, 5 was even more so, especially with what the trailers showcased.

Another problem I have with Ubisoft games is that they’re all the same. In theory, they are. Similar menus, similar upgrade system, similar open world, they’re not unique nor does this game look like that either.

These are just issues when it comes to Ubisoft directly. The game itself doesn’t do much either. It’s not the fact it’s a female protagonist, I don’t mind that – it’s the setting of the game. We’ve had Battlefront 2, 2 Jedi games, and Squadrons – all of which are set in the same era which has already proven to be tedious at this point. If you didn’t already know, Outlaws is set between Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi.

Ubisoft

Now, the trailer does look fine. I admit that but this is it when I revert to my issue about Ubisoft. All of their trailers look great. I’m looking particularly at Assassin’s Creed Mirage here. The trailer looked exception but the game was more bare-bones than Brotherhood which came out in 2010. We have also had issues with their trailers being nothing like the games as well. I will never forget the trailer for the first Watch Dogs game.

Regardless though, I’ll be pre-ordering the game. That sounds counterproductive considering all of the points I’ve raised but I’m a huge Star Wars fan. That trumps any distrust for Ubisoft. So ultimately I’ll be supporting it with my wallet as will many others because of the franchise. I hope to be proven wrong. I hope to come back to this article and eat my own words. I truly do hope it’s a game changer for Ubisoft but I can’t see it.

Star Wars Outlaws is now available for pre-order and will be released on August 30th, 2024.
