Growing up, Power Rangers was my go-to. I was born in 1993 so I watched many of the series when I was a kid.
Unfortunately, for me, I’m unable to watch the shows now as I find them far too much. Still, it’s one of those cases where I let nostalgia remember it for me, including my memories of the excellent David Jason Frank.
A gritty Power Rangers project has been discussed by fans over the years. It was further fuelled by a fan-made film that was released on YouTube 7 years ago. If you were somehow living under a rock then, here’s the video;
This looked amazing, even more so that it was just a bunch of Power Rangers fans that made this, and it rightfully went viral. Even now, today, like I am, it’s still talked about.
When the 2017 Power Rangers movie was released, a lot of us, including me expected this to go down a similar path to the fan-made film but with slightly less blood and swearing. It was meant to be more serious which to be fair, it was, but not in the light that fan one is.
I enjoyed the 2017 Power Rangers movie as well, it definitely deserved a sequel contrary to popular opinions but I believe it was still a decent watch.
For me, I still want it to go further. I know Power Rangers is mainly for kids, I know that. I’m an adult now, I’m 29. I still love Power Rangers but I want something that fits the vibe. After all, the majority of people that are Power Rangers fans were from around my generation and are all adults now.
Kids do still watch it, and that’s fine. There are rumors that we’re still going to get new shows and possibly movies for children. I think we adult fans who watched the shows as kids deserve to have an adult-themed one.
Yeah, maybe it’ll flop. But it’s one of the franchises that deserve a pretty dark twist on it. I mean to be fair, half of them are usually running around with swords and shit anyway, so c’mon.
You can always tell, even in the kids show that it has the potential to go down that route. It just needs a solid cast and a good Director and I believe we could have a hit here.
As much as I want to go back and watch the old shows, I physically can’t. I cringe. So the next best thing I have right now is the 2017 movie. I want something that is directed to adult fans who grew up with the franchise. After all, Power Rangers is a franchise that deserves all of the love and attention in the world.
