I shredded this game before it was released. I’m not even going to lie about it. When I heard the gameplay mechanics involved a card system with a deck, it threw me off and I was completely against it.
This is a classic case of judging a book by its cover. I was so wrong and am happy enough to admit that as well.
When I eventually bought the game due to boredom with gaming at the time, I was blown away from the moment I started the game. The story and the setting were fantastic. Although the card mechanics took me a couple of hours to fully grasp, once I did, this game became so much better.
Since playing it and gaining the platinum trophy on PS5, I’ve recommended this game to a few people who’ve then gone out to buy it and enjoyed it as well.
Even today, I recommended this to my brother who loves turn-based games but was skeptical. I’ll await his thoughts but I have a feeling he’ll love the game just as much as I did and everyone else I recommended this to.
It’s probably unlikely we will get a sequel but I do fully believe the game should. The story was fantastic enough as it was and I’d love to see this continue. I fell in love with the characters and even the story of my own created character. It all came full circle and I was actually a bit sad when it ended.
All in all, I got 70 hours out of the game and all of it was enjoyable. That’s not bad for a game that wasn’t priced at £70 at launch as most AAA games are in the UK.
The DLC content has been brilliant but a sequel would fully delve into this all. There’s a few more stuff they could add to a sequel and I wouldn’t be mad if it kind of felt the same albeit with an upgrade to the graphics.
More parties, more abilities, more characters, a new setting or make the original setting bigger and so much more.
The game didn’t have great success with popularity on release and that’s why I always say this game is beyond underrated and deserves so much more recognition than it has already. Turn-based games are rare nowadays so the fact the studio and developers decided to go down this route and pull it off is admirable.
It’s not just the turn-based elements that they pulled off. It’s the ability to include a vast array of characters that all felt different. After a while, you start to figure out what characters work best for the strategy you go for but that’s the beauty of it.
I had a few battles where I used my favorite characters but it simply just didn’t work. I had to take a step back to strategize everything and pay attention to the enemies and environment. It requires you to think and I loved that about it.
If a sequel isn’t going to happen then fair enough but I for one would absolutely love it if we got a second game to continue the story and make further improvements to the overall experience.
