Last year, amid the COVID pandemic, DC announced a virtual comic-con styled event purely dedicated to everything from DC. From HBO Max, The CW, cinema, games, comics, we got a piece of everything, and it was damn perfect!
We knew DC wasn’t attending SDCC this year, and it makes sense considering their standalone event did so well back in August in 2020 and even generated over 22 million viewers. A huge feat for a virtual event!
It also proves that franchises such as DC and Marvel no longer need a comic-con to showcase their upcoming projects, even Disney’s Investor Day did very well back in December.
However, I don’t even Disney expected a huge response to their event, so it wouldn’t surprise me if they make it a regular thing too, but FanDome was a different kettle of fish.
It was designed and built to be a replacement to their usual comic-con appearance, and the fact that fans no matter where they were in the world, got to tune in live – instead of waiting for specific Halls at SDCC to release their trailers.
And that was a big one for me. I live in the UK, and getting a ticket to SDCC is damn near impossible unless I put a LOT of money into it, and considering how expensive flights and hotels are to San Diego at that time, it’s likely never going to happen for me, unfortunately.
And this is where DC FanDome comes into it. I got to tune in with a couple of friends and bask in the upcoming projects. Some we knew were coming, others that surprised us, and obviously the odd few we didn’t care for. But it was exciting, being able to watch as you, and the rest of the world gets to watch the trailers and news at the exact same time.
The entire appearance of the event was done well, there weren’t moments I was bored, and every single project got its spotlight and time to shine.
I believe now that DC knows the event was a monumental success last year, this year’s event could be even better, which is difficult to imagine considering how amazing the first one was.
What’s even better? The event is completely free! There’s no tickets, no wait times, nothing. You use their link and you’re in the event, live-streaming. Despite DC and WB making some poor moves lately, one thing you cannot knock is their ability to put on one hell of a show!
DC FanDome will return on October 16th, 2021. You can read the details here.
