It goes without saying, the Arrowverse is a monumental high for when it comes to TV. Multiple shows that cross over every so often, and what’s even better is these are superhero comic shows. Something we’re passionate about, obviously.
I’ve always been a geek when it comes to this stuff. Arrow and The Flash really set the bar high when it came to television shows, it’s something Marvel never really did for me. Even if Daredevil and Punisher were fantastic.
Don’t get me wrong, each show has had their high points. Let’s look at it;
Arrow had the first 3 seasons, following with the final that were great. Supergirl’s first 3 seasons, Batwoman, Legends of Tomorrow’s first 2 seasons, The Flash’s first 3, and of course more. Especially some of the crossover events.
But, despite all the early successes, it’s just so lacklustre now. Truthfully, The Flash is the only CW show I look forward to every week. The rest are just chores to keep up with now.
Arrow finished, and that was the only other show for me that I got excited for. So, that sucked. Before I get into this more, I want to note that everybody has different opinions. I understand there are super fans out there that love these shows, even if they put out trash, and that’s okay. This is just how I feel about it.
Legends of Tomorrow
Legends of Tomorrow is now one of the most awful shows I’ve ever watched. Which is weird, right? Because this show had the most potential and endless possibilities. Seasons 1 & 2 were great, they were different, exciting, and it constantly felt like one big crossover. Now it’s just an over-the-top mess that is difficult to watch. It feels to me like they just tried to be different, and in doing so, I stopped watching. It’s just not for me. A Fairy Godmother is a no-no.
Get the cameos in, explore timelines in the future with our futuristic heroes such as Bart Allen, Batman Beyond and others. Switch it back to a serious show that embarks on serious missions with proper action like it originally was. I feel like they’ve tried to jump on the humour and jokes way too much, and it’s just blatant. They’re trying way too hard when with a show of this calibre you don’t have to.
Supergirl
Supergirl had a strong 3 seasons, which seems to be the trend of the CW shows as explained above. Then, it went downhill. For me, the issue with the show is that it’s political. I get that politics are rife in hero stuff, but it’s just too much. Especially in a show like this. The villains have been ridiculously boring with barely any attachment or even remotely anything to offer.
The last 2 seasons have been a bore-fest, and it’s no wonder they average quite low with ourselves in reviews because each episode is just difficult to watch. They focus far too much on elements that don’t matter, instead of focusing on the things that do. I’m desperately hoping Brainiac is the next big bad, and now the DEO is gone. The show does bring me a glimmer of hope moving forward.
Batwoman
Batwoman had an okay season. It wasn’t perfect by any stretch of means, but it had potential. Ruby Rose did an amazing job with the role, and fit the character perfectly. Now, because there’s only one season of this it’s tough to really hammer down on the show.
Ruby infamously quit her role and was subsequently replaced by Javicia Leslie. This is my problem. Not the actress, but the story. It’s going to change everything we know as Javicia isn’t cast as Kate Kane, but a new character. It’s going to go either way for me and I’m nervous for the writers to see how they pull it off. I have no doubt in my mind Javicia will smash the role, but it’s the writing that has me anxious.
Black Lightning
Cress Williams was the perfect casting option for Mr Jefferson himself, he does well in the role. But, the show is just boring. Simple as that. I watched the first 2 seasons and I really struggled to ever get excited for the show.
The writers told us he wasn’t part of the Arrowverse, which put daggers in the back for me, then went and included him anyway. This is something the CW need to make their minds upon because it’s pathetic. The wasted opportunities here with the show and the other shows, well, it shows. The show has potential, and I’m going to rewatch the entire thing all over again to see if it changes my mind. I did the exact same thing with Supergirl so I leave this open-minded.
The Flash
This is still a show I get excited for, but again, it’s far from perfect. It’s also had rocky seasons with rocky story arks. The first 3 seasons were incredible, some of the best television in history. After this, it fell short. Season 4 was awful, season 5 started great and ended up trash. Season 6 was cut short, but it has been an intense season.
Next season is where my hope beams, purely because of the speculations of Godspeed or Red Death being the big bad. The Flash is a hero with a million different storylines, some characters do tend to cause issues with it but it always bounces back. It’s something I love about it.
Superman and Lois
I literally don’t care. That’s it. I just don’t. Tyler Hoechlin is an incredible Superman, that’s not up for debate. It’s a show that makes me think; why? Do we really need this?
We had Smallville that went through Clark Kent’s story, I just believe the resources could have been better spent on another show. I’ll still watch this because despite how much I don’t care for it, I am somewhat a little intrigued.
There you have it, those are the summed up reasons why I’m just not excited anymore. As I said, I’ll continue to watch them but I just don’t expect much now, which shouldn’t be the case.
I hope with COVID19 and the delays, the writers haven’t just sat on the original scripts, and gone back in to ensure each season that drops will be insanely good. After all, they have the potential to do that judging by past experiences with this universe.
