Why Insomniac’s Spider-Man 2 Will Be Tough To Beat

If you remove the fact that Spider-Man 2 had no DLC or next to no care post-release, the game’s a practical masterpiece. The game had everything you could want from satisfying swinging, an emotionally jarring story, and incredible upgrades. It’s still a shame we never got any DLC for it.

I know Spider-Man 3 is years away at this point considering we’re supposed to be getting Venom and Wolverine prior to that and we all know how those projects are going right now.

Spider-Man 3 was on the leaked roadmap and I can’t see Insomniac slowing down considering the vast amount of money they’ve earned from these games. I do however think the second will be hard to beat.

The thing is when the first game came out. You knew where things could be touched on, upgrades added to the game even down to quality of life updates. The second game was better for it and I believe almost everything I wished for was added.

Spider-Man 2 allows you to play as both Peter and Miles with the ability to switch at almost any point you prefer, especially when you’re in free roam. Both characters felt similar but played differently. Once you progress through the game, Peter has Venom abilities and Miles has his electric abilities.

That’s what makes the game so special. It’s not just a case of having to settle for certain abilities. You can switch if you get bored. Considering what we get with Peter was his own game in the first and the same goes for Miles in his own standalone game. I have no doubt a third game will do the same but I can’t see it being edge-of-the-seat stuff like the second was.

The second had some exceptional moments albeit so did the first but I felt like overall, the story for the second was better. One of the notable mentions here is when Kraven stabs Peter and he dies from it. Harry’s symbiote attaches itself to Peter and you get the new ability pressing L3+R3, it’s pretty much 1 or 2 hits to take down an enemy when it’s active. You feel powerful because of it. It’s OP but it’s meant to be. It’s why when you finally get to control Venom, it feels significant because it is. You feel powerful because you’re supposed to. It’s moments like this that made the experience so great.

In the first 2 games, you felt like an underdog. Especially when you have to fight against Doc Ock and friends whereas in this, Kraven becomes less of a threat as the story progresses. When you possess the symbiote abilities you know for a fact who wins this fight now. I struggle to see how a third will live beyond that but of course, I’m not the one being paid to write a script or make these decisions – that’s up to Insomniac.

Traversal is another conversation. I don’t think they should do more than they have.

The winged webs were a great addition and it felt good, the boosts with the wind made it feel better. I used the wings fairly frequently when I was traversing the map. I don’t think they should do much more than that anyway simply because I don’t want to take away from the swinging as that’s one of the main points of the game. Fast travel exists, winged webs exist, and swinging of course exists, do we need more than that?

What the second game reminds me of is Star Wars Jedi: Survivor. The first game was fantastic but the second did everything the first was missing and now it’s difficult to see how it could really improve further. When I reviewed the game back on launch, I gave it 10/10 with the only dislike being no new game+ which has since been added. Of course, it’s my own opinion and I’m biased being a huge Spider-Man fan but this experience is one of the best gaming experiences I’ve had. it’s why despite Insomniac’s radio silence as of late, I still trust them to deliver moving forward.

I just hope they continue with the symbiote abilities. It doesn’t get much better than that. How do you improve on what Peter can do than the symbiote abilities? It’s like Miles felt more powerful in his game compared to Peter but then in this, Peter completely annihilates Miles when it comes to abilities and upgrades. So realistically a few tweaks here and that’s all Insomniac need.

One of the very few things I didn’t like was Miles’ choice of suits. They felt lackluster compared to Peter’s. Understandably, Peter has the movies to back up his wardrobe which all suits are there. Miles doesn’t and I feel like he needs some better designs. I like the fact Insomniac kept the designs different and this should remain. I’d love to see a create-your-own-suit mechanic introduced. It wouldn’t be difficult to do if they introduced an element similar to Far From Home when Peter builds his suit on a jet.

The story so far in all 3 of the games has been fantastic, it’s been immersive so I fully expect that to continue. In terms of general gameplay, combat, traversal, and even the upgrading system – it’s difficult to see what they could do more. I’ve checked wishlists for the game and so many of them are so minor.

I’ve seen people ask for the Green Goblin as a main villain. A good shout. I see people mainly discuss what they want from the story than the game itself and that’s when you know a developer has done extremely well with their game. I’d honestly love to hear what you guys think here. What more could a third game do above the second to make the experience even better? Please comment below and let me know.

We now move forward to Insomniac’s next projects as Spider-Man is likely years away at this point. There are even theories that the game won’t be here until the PlayStation 6 is on the store shelves. It makes sense considering according to the roadmap, it’s meant to be Venom this year and Wolverine next year although I think that’s unlikely at this stage. Spider-Man 3 was scheduled for 2028 but I think we can expect (if these happen) to be pushed back at least a year. Either way though, I’m excited.
