If you have missed it, Marvel’s Blade has lost it’s director… again. Filmmaker Yann Demange is no longer set to direct Blade for Marvel Studios. The film which is a reboot for Marvel and will star Mahershala Ali has lost it’s second director.
According to insiders, Demange departed the film amicably weeks ago because the development of the project has stretched over multiple years. Why is this movie, of all the movies that Marvel currently has in the works is the one movie that is causing the most trouble in development?
Is it because Marvel is too stubborn and wants an iconic script or is it simply because the writer’s room is a mess and has been for a while? Screenwriter Eric Pearson, who co-wrote “The Fantastic Four” for Marvel is the latest writer to take on the script for Blade.
This is only after at least five other writers have taken passes on the film which includes Michael Green, Stacy Osei-Kuffour, Michael Starrbury, Beau DeMayo, and Nic Pizzolatto.
While Marvel has not officially moved the release date of November 7, 2025, for the film, it looks increasingly unlikely that this project will be able to begin production to make that release date. I fully expect this to be delayed.
The next four films for Marvel are Deadpool & Wolverine in 2024, Captain America: Brave New World, Thunderbolts, and The Fantastic Four are all scheduled for 2025. This will fit into the statement Bob Iger released stating a maximum of three movies a year.
Honestly, I was excited for this when it was announced at San Diego Comic-Con back in 2019 but every few months negative things are released about it and it destroys any hope I have. I’ll be amazed if I see this movie, and it would not surprise me if we see Mahershala Ali walk away from the project either.
