Assassin’s Creed. The franchise can be the best thing ever or the absolute worst thing ever. There’s no doubt it’s a franchise that has seriously struggled to maintain consistency with fans.
They’ve had some major hits with their characters such as the obvious Ezio Auditore, Edward Kenway, and more recently Bayek. They’ve also had some stinkers as well and even the latest Mirage game didn’t align all that well considering the events that played out in Valhalla.
There have been 2 games in recent years that haven’t even felt like an Assassin’s Creed game and that’s Odysessy which was before assassins were even a thing and then Valhalla which felt like a God of War rip-off that didn’t do the Norse mythology justice at all.
Now, we’re supposed to be getting a new game set in Japan and we were meant to be getting a live-action series as well.
It’s been a long time since Ubisoft put out an article confirming Netflix will be making a live-action show, an anime, and an animation. This article I believe was from 2020 (although I could be wrong as there’s no date on Ubisoft’s article) and we had nothing from the 2022 Showcase event either.
The only news we’ve had with the show in 2023 was that the showrunner, Jeb Stuart left due to creative differences. To put this into even further perspective; he left in January. It’s now November.
I understand the strikes may have had a part to play but we’ve had absolutely nothing since the initial announcement. No casts, no details on the setting, no idea of a release date, and no updates on the show’s backroom team. Nada. Nothing.
It’s what annoys me more than anything when studios do this. They announce something huge but there’s been no movement on it at all. The Warriors reboot is a prime example of announcing a show but you have nothing to go on except the actual announcement. It’s ridiculous.
I love the franchise and I think it’s one of the few gaming universes that can work well if done right in live-action. The movie didn’t do great but it had good moments in there. The good thing about this franchise is the scope and depth of it. You can go to pretty much any time zone, any country, and create a story about an assassin.
It just needs proper care and attention to be done right. However, as the title of the article mentioned – I have zero hope for this now. Netflix has been canceling shows like it’s nobody’s business over the last couple of years and is becoming a streaming platform with very little to offer – I don’t trust it at all. I do have a strong feeling this will be a project that will be forgotten about and then eventually canceled.
I hope I’m wrong. I also hope that it’s due to the strikes we’ve had no information on this. I hope this article comes back to bite me, I desperately hope it does as this was a project I was initially very excited about. I say it again, I HOPE that in the next few weeks news comes out, a release date follows and then we can all get excited again but as of right now, all that hope is gone.
