Let's Talk

Why Star Wars Needs A Series Set In The Old Republic

Star Wars is one of the most popular franchises on the planet but the franchise goes so much deeper than the stuff we see on the television or the big screen. We’ve only really seen Star Wars move away from the Skywalker era once in live-action with The Acolyte which was set in the High Republic era.

The Acolyte got its fair share of hate. Like it or hate it, it still had some decent moments in there. This worries me though, it feels like Star Wars attempted to experiment out of the known lore and it failed. I do hope this isn’t the end of what could be with the Old Republic.

The Old Republic is an era set thousands of years before The Phantom Menace’s events but filled with interesting lore. Admittedly, I don’t know much of that particular lore but one character makes it worthwhile looking at.

That character is Revan. I’ve already written about why a character deserves a series or a movie and it rings true. He’s just one of many incredibly intriguing characters. Bastila Shan, Jolee Bindo, Darth Bane, Malak, Zaalbar and so many others.

I mean, Darth Bane alone is an interesting figure. He’s the man who created the rule of two which means there can only be a Master and an Apprentice in Sith. That tradition remained for thousands of years including the Prequels/OG trilogy. He’s one of the very few Old Republic that has been shown in the canon universe. He appeared to Yoda in The Clone Wars animated series when Yoda was on a trial.

I think exploring this era of the Star Wars lore, gives potential for creativity. We’re in this constant cycle of the Skywalker era and besides a couple of extra projects, there’s very little left to explore here. There’s only so much that can be done without impacting the Original trilogy.

Not to mention that, I’m just bored of the same timeframe. I’ll take a second season for Ahsoka and Kenobi, plus a movie/series showcasing Vader after the events of Revenge of the Sith and then we can move on.

This doesn’t even have to be a series, it could be a movie franchise instead. There’s already enough in the books to explore, not to mention the events in the Knights of the Old Republic games series. I’d love if it we were able to maneuver away from the OG trilogy and focus on something relatively new.

I understand these stories have been told in books and whatnot but imagine seeing the Revan and Malak fight in live-action?! It would be exceptional and if it got done right, it would be one of the best lightsaber duals ever.

Just take a look at this animated fan-film of the fight;

Revan even fought The Mandalorian’s in a war and won. He managed to withstand torture from the Sith Empire. He’s an absolute beast as well above all else.

We always have this constant story when it comes to the Skywalker era. Jedi pops up, Jedi tries to restore the Order, Jedi fails and then we repeat. It’s even similar to Cal Kestis in the Jedi games except we can see what’s creeping in there with the dark side stuff in the second game.

By going this route, we can showcase something new to casuals and huge Star Wars fans as well. I’ve always loved the franchise and even my knowledge around the Old Republic is very limited but it’s something I’d love to see explored in a canon and live-action setting.

What do you think? Do you think Disney should consider looking at this timeline for a potential series or a movie? Let me know in the comments below.
