We recently learned that Netflix will be creating a live-action series on their platform, and from what we understand, Warner Bros. will no longer be doing any future Pokémon projects including the sequel to Detective Pikachu.
You can read our official news on this here.
Now, before we get into this. I am 28 years old, I grew up with the original 151 Pokémon cards, including the animated Indigo League series. This was essentially my childhood for quite a few years, also in that was the games for the GameBoy.
So when we hear the news that a live-action series is being done over at Netflix, my first instant reaction is the original 151. I know all of them, I know the original characters such as Ash, Misty, and Brock.
Whilst doing it this way, it doesn’t just cater to children, it caters to adults who were children when Pokémon was first introduced, thus further adding to the popularity.
I know there are fans out there that did prefer the generations after Gen 1, and that’s okay. Depending on how the deal is with Pokémon and Netflix, this could be a multi-season thing that could introduce the generations as it goes.
I did enjoy Detective Pikachu, it was a fun, engaging movie that I still enjoy, but I love nothing more than the best parts of my childhood are reintroduced.
When Pokémon Let’s Go came out for the Nintendo Switch, I bought the console purely for that game and often return to the game and start over.
The issue Detective Pikachu had is that it didn’t capture the pure essence of Pokémon. I want to see Pokémon captured, I want to see gym battles, I want to see evolutions. Seeing all of that in live-action would be super special.
Pokémon is still one of the highest-grossing IPs in the world, and it’s definitely no surprise, but it can still do so much more.
This is just my own opinion on the matter, and some people will prefer we move on, but I’d love for this brand new deal to start where it all began…
In Kanto.
